Was playing RE1 and RE2 back to back. I love RE2 but I don't understand the reverence it gets when it's a step down from it's predecessor in many ways.
The level design in RE2 is pretty linear compared to the RE1 mansion. RE1 wasn't exactly the most open ended map out there but yeah could do a few things in any order you like. In RE2 you'll mostly get the important items you need in order.
The puzzles in RE1 aren't brain teasers but things like the Cradle to Grave paintings, V-Jolt, and computer password puzzle in the lab had more going on than the RE2 puzzles. Most of them are bring item from point a to b or block pushing with only handful asking a bit more like the library bookcases, the oil lamps to the gold cog, or the basement power but these are pretty simplistic compared to it's predecessor.
When it comes to resource management, RE2 just gives you more than RE1 and you don't have to make as many opportunity choices when it comes to spending resources.
