I also was ten when I played them (III, WT, V and Band hero), tried to replay them lately (at least III and WT since they came out in PC) and found out Tour's music is lacking, and that it gets somewhat decent at the last stages.

DJ Hero was the best one. The controller was really fun to mess with and learn and the mashups are 90% great, 8% fucking godlike (and 2% duds). Those games are half the reason "mashup" is one of my favorite music genres. Fuck Activision for milking GH until they had to bury DJ Hero alive with it, canceling the 3DS spinoff and any prospect for a proper third game. The only good thing is that you can get both games and the turntable for pocket change.

I mostly liked WT for introducing me to some bands I never knew of before. L'Via L'Viaquez lead me to Frances The Mute which is one of my favorite albums.

For the gameplay yes, in GH you had to be very precise and the notes falling speed in it was too much, RB had more smooth movement and the buttons were less problematic to play with.

For songlist GH has better lists.

the rb controllers are more forgiving for trills and sweeps, but the strum bar (and I get what they were going for) just isn't up to scratch
and they're expensive as shit now because sausage fingered oafs go through them like bubble wrap

I played it at a friend's. It was fun. They had fun with the visuals; IIRC In Too Deep had you on a ship as a kraken attacked it.

GH3 is the definition of soulless. Is it a fun game? Yes, it's fun but very flawed and inferior to the games that preceded it, yes even GH1 I don't care if the HOPOs are broken in that game, it's a better crafted game than GH3.
The biggest issues with GH3 are

The biggest sin for any rhythm game. And this is not referring to the quality of the music, but the quality of the notecharts. It seems like neversoft and/or activision just chose songs they liked or were popular rather than anything that let itself to make fun and/or interesting. Compare this to GH2 which is masterfully selected songs that were iconic and fun, or songs that were just better suited for gameplay over more popular songs by the same groups (ex. "sweet child o mine" over "welcome to the jungle" or the original version of "misirlou" over the more recognized version featured in pulp fiction)

You can't even say that this is scrub talk because they made the timing window wide as a barn door that you could realistically mash through a lot of shit. So while an uneducated glance may tell you this game is harder than GH2 because it has more notes per chart, the timing was so easy that the game was actually easier. It really was just stupider than GH2. Also way to many songs that didn't fit into a game where you exclusively play guitar. Tons of keytar bullshit like "When You Were Young" and "Knights of Cydonia" like why even put those songs in the game when in 2007 there were still hundreds of better options for guitar-centric games

If you use star power efficiently you can totally fuck up one or two parts and still 5 star it.

Did you play DJMax with the official controller or did you play it with the normal game pad / keyboard?. The experience is vastly different between the two to the point where I would say playing the game with a normal controller is pointless. If you didn't play with the official djmax controller then playing "real" pop'n with the 9-button arcade controller will be a completely different, and better, experience

Blitz was inferior to Unplugged in every way except that all the songs from the console version were on it. Blitz should have really been Unplugged on console, but that would have taken effort to make note charts that weren't just automatically cranked out by some program probably.

That said, all "guitar" games except gitadora/GF are piss easy compared to, say, stepmania/DDR/ITG where instead of "hit" or "miss" you have various levels of success of how tightly timed your hit is, and you need to hit at the perfect timing, not just press the button before the note comes up like GH3, or have like a 300ms window to hit it afterwards like GH:WT/RB

So Activision handed GH3 over Neversoft, and they churned out the rest of the sequels

If I remember right it was shoulders and triggers for GRYB and A for orange. I had a friend who only played on controller, he was super mad when they took that functionality out after GH3.

Pretty much this, GH 1 and 2 had the sense to focus more on songs that were fun to play on a guitar, whereas once Activision took full control they just filled it with the biggest chart-toppers. Even if the actual guitar sections were the same chords looped for 80% of the song.

Not only that, but Rockband also has Aqualung, Bat Country, Been Caught Stealing, Bodies (as a rockband network track), and even more megadeth than rust in peace. Children of the Grave and Chemical Warfare would of been nice to have in rockband, though we did eventually get Angel of Death as RB4 DLC, and the solo isn't a clusterfuck like Pulse of the Maggots thankfully.

If you mean popular music, probably Freebird, Message in a Bottle, Beast and the Harlot or Cliffs of Dover for Guitar Hero. Battery, Black Hole Sun, Creep, Maps, and Green Grass and High Tides Forever for Rock Band. I ended up really liking a lot of the smaller acts/songs that weren't in the main playlists of those games but those it's pretty hard to associate with anything but the games they were in.

Yeah it will work for beginners, most guitarists start by learning shit from tabs anyway, this is just a more intuitive way of doing it, and it has like minigames and shit that kinda help with your playing, but it won't teach you fully proper. A lot of guitarists will start with easy songs and move 1 or 2 fingers around the fretboard and only play power chords, but eventually if you wanna get better you gotta learn how to stretch and use all of your fingers and all that shit.

The thing is though there's a difference between just being able to play songs on a guitar and actually being able to play a guitar, and it depends how far you want to go with it. Learning songs your whole life and increasing the difficulty is great for your actual physical playing but you're never gonna be able to improvise a solo on the spot or play in key with other musicians even if you can shred crazy solos from songs you've learnt, you're just gonna be a guy who plays songs he learnt. If you really want to get into it you have to learn shit like your scales and chords and how music actually works, Rocksmith really isn't gonna properly teach you that, the best way to learn it is get a guitar teacher who knows what he's doing. This can be learnt from ear and feel though, you can learn enough songs from ear and experiment enough that you eventually can just feel out where you're going and get the noise you want out of the guitar while improvising, you just won't know exactly what it is you're doing in terms of scales and notes and shit and it would take a while to learn this way.

Super late to the gh craze, only played one for the first time this year at a dave n busters that still had a gh3 cabinet.
But man gh is probably one of the funnest games I've played. Clone hero is also amazing since you get every song from every game and even some fanmade charts (which sadly are for really good players, which I am not)
