Why are there so few RPGs with legitimately interesting and compelling video game settings? I'm so sick of the standard fantasy fare.
Why are there so few RPGs with legitimately interesting and compelling video game settings...

This doesn't look like a vidya, user.
underrail and grim dawn nailed their settings, despite some obvious cliches.
Xenoblade
Originality is scarce
New ideas are risky
>turn based combat
>japanese
i dont know why, but those two concepts always make me automatically ignore a game.
i just watched this again last night. my 2nd favorite film.
Takes less effort, and the majority will eat it up.
Maybe not the kind of game you are looking for, but Caves of Qud has very compelling, at least in my opinion. Much of it is learned through reading in-game books, item/creature descriptions, and general exploration, with a small amount learned from dialog.
In short;
>far future
>planet was once inhabited by a highly advanced civilization which were masters of cybernetics, biomechanics, mechatronics, and energy production
>civilization reached beyond its grasp in some way, and subsequently disappeared entirely
>thousands of years later, the world is repopulated by mutated humans/creatures, sentient plants, wayward robots, cybernetic purists, and mechanimist zealots
>fresh water is the main currency
>parts of the world are ravaged by the followers of a very powerful psychic
There are so many other details about the lore and history of this world that I would not feel right sharing. They are best experienced through in-game discovery, from the simple water ritual, to the ballad of Saad Amus The Sky-Bear.
grim dawn has NO RIGHT being as good as it is
not an rpg
Xenoblade doesn't have turn based combat and Japan are the only ones who do truly unique and interesting settings
i read the description of the game on steam and thought "ok fine, this looks like a cool diablo clone to waste my time on" and then i unlocked Primal Strike and HOLY GOD this game is fucking amazing.
Because normalfags are the videogame audience and they don't care for anything even remotely intellectually stimulating. They want something to "burn some hours in" when they "unwind" from their office cubicle 8 to 8 job.
That's pretty generic.
one of my few 100s is a 2H primal strike melee warder
>yfw you get Mythical Ultos' Axe
all of the AoE skills are so fucking good, especially the occultist ones. Watching the Bloody Pox burn through enemies like wildfire is one of the most satisfying vidya feels ever.
Name me one other game with a similar setting then.
Come on user, I'm waiting.
I just want a RPG with a classical-era-style setting. Still have all the standard high fantasy stuff going on, with magic and elves and all that shit, but also with a greco-roman aesthetic instead of the typical medieval stuff.
I've always wondered: What would a turn-based RPG in a city setting be like?
I was thinkin' of something like Yakuza 0 with interchangable styles with unique skills that can be learned.
Now that I think about it something with an "action bar" would work well.
>Basic fighting style has average attacks and an average recharge type
>Fast style has weak attacks but a fast recharge time
>Slow style has strong attacks but a slow recharge time
My first immediate thought for characters are two anthropomorphic dragons based on Yin and Yang (but they're both male) who do dirty work, pummeling assholes, taking their money, and using it to build up the clan they work for.
They quickly realize their clan has VERY ill intent regarding their usage of money (like starting clan wars 'n shit) so they end up tackling the problem themselves. Also there'd probably be wholesome moments between the two because two dudes having wholesome moments together is cute
Because you don't need to actually learn anything new or strange, you can immediately make assumptions and get into it more or less. Its easily relatable and similar to why there are so few games with non-human, but not furry protagonists and characters.
olexra's flash freeze is nice for leveling
trozan's sky shard is great, literally rain down giant chunks of FUCK YOU on the enemy but my TSS dude is squishy although I need to level it more and get better gear
anything demolitionist is great. demo is the best 'average fag fighting with random shit' class
>Guy that made evengelon asked to make a standalone movie about the knight princess
>Anime was a mistake man said no cause it would be to prowar
Anime was a mistake.
Morrowind was great and that direction for the franchise had a lot of potential but I don't think The Elder Scrolls will ever be half as interesting ever again.
Oblivion could have been interesting too if they stuck to the established lore instead of trying to cash in on the lotr craze. What a shame.
Because in every company their is a project manager or many and their job is to take a fat shit on any artistic vision the artists come up with and put the matters into your own hand and make something your half retarded grandma could enjoy
Imagine what the franchise would be like if every province was as weird as Morrowind. Imo it wouldn't be possible. There aren't enough people with the creative writing chops to reliably churn out content like that.
Granblue Relink is going to be interesting because it takes place in a world where the only land is floating islands with all sorts of different kinds of architectures and stuff.
It has some generic fantasy stuff in there, but the deeper it gets the cooler it gets.

jrpgs are not rpgs
Olay retard
You need more creative directors that take hallucinogens. Not kidding in the least. Japan has a big spot of trouble doing it because every single one of them carry a mandatory 20 year prison sentence for possession unless you can buy your way out of it.
You can only draw upon what you know.
jpgs are not pngs
>turn based
what did he mean by this
You're the one playing jrpgs.
How difficult is it? The only roguelike I've played much of is DCSS. It was a lot of fun, but I never got very far.
you won't find interesting areas in wRPGs
I said olay, not okay, get ready for our fight, you dirty bull
age of decadence
