Either play the older Arland games first to get some background on some of the characters that appear in Lulua or just go straight for Lulua. If you want to play the older ones first the order is Rorona, then Totori and then Meruru.

The only real connection between the games is the world and some characters. Story is always self contained within the game

They're broken up into trilogies. The ones on Steam are:
Arland
Rorona -> Totori -> Meruru -> Rorona (again because of its post game and time travel) and now -> Lulua (which was just released)

I've played some Rorona because I was curious.

The dungeons and battles are simple but it really just takes away the abstraction. If yoy have 25 attack, you're going to do 25 damage with a basic strike. Character ability kits are a baseline thst you are meant to improve and advance with Alchemy, which can ball out of control and get you way ahead of the power curve. There's a fun mechanic in Rorona where you make multiples of a result item. The ingredients have their Quality score averaged but the Traits are copied across all result items in the batch, traits like Extra Sell Value, quality up, mp heal, and triple damage versus animals. You can use this trick to breed better and better supplements and make some broken stuff.

So it's just an annoyance then
