You should be able to pick which region you start in, and there should be low/medium/high level areas in each one. Gym leaders can also have teams based on how many badges you have - Crystal Clear does this and it's great.

Explain how it does. Starting region can be 1-40ish (including that elite four yes nigger), next region is high 20s/low 30s to 60 or so. Final region is 50 or so to 90.

How is this bad? Pokemon always made grinding lv80+ a pain in the ass because most wild shit barely hits 50, trainers might get to 70 post elite four..and that's only one fight per trainer.

What does it actually do? I keep seeing people shill for it or bashing its autistic community and cringy bosses but I haven't seen the actual thing.

It essentially makes Crystal "open-world" by removing nearly all of the mandatory events/"cutscenes" in the game. You can pick whether you start in Kanto or Johto and, as I mentioned, battle gym leaders in any order you want. Every Gym Leader has 16 different teams, based on how many badges you currently have.

Last I played, wild Pokemon are not level scaled, so getting to and from certain places is still tricky. As an example, I started in Kanto and decided I wanted to take on Blaine before anything else (another thing - HMs are removed, so you can surf immediately). I went to surf south of Pallet town, only to immediately run into level 30 Tentecools with my level 6 Charmander and level 3 Pidgey.

I'll admit this was ~6 months ago, and I've been way too lazy to start it up again (since updating the ROM, last I checked, is a pain in the ass if you're not in Goldenrod city), so things may have changed. Still a brilliant idea and it's well executed overall.
