So user, which survival horror series do you like better, Resident Evil or Silent Hill?

Silent hill is art, Resident Evil is fun
Marry SH
Fuck RE
Kill the evil within
I love Resident Evil 1-4 just as much as Silent Hill 1-4 and think they both do their own thing, but if I had to choose I'd lean more towards SH.
In terms of atmosphere and plot, Silent Hill is the deph itself. Re is just a low budget horror movie
In terms of gameplay, well.. sh relies too much into atmosphere, so it's not that important to fight enemies. Re is a better game to "have fun for a while"
SH, it's not even close.
Sh1 > re1
Sh2 = re2
Sh3 > re3
Sh4 ? Re4
Sh5
>Sh4 ? Re4
RE is more fun, SH is infinitely superior.
RE is good fun but I get way more nostalgic for SH. I'm still listening to SH songs in my day-to-day.
Games aren't art.
only sh2 has some depth in plot
>Sh2 = re2
In what way???
The real question should be
Parasite Eve or RE?
Silent Hill for me
Silent Hill is more atmospheric "psychological" horror
Resident Evil is fun B-level horror schlock
Both have their place but also RE has better Gameplay
They're too different to be compared, SH relies more on keeping you on a constant state of fear and caution with is great use of visuals and audio, but RE has usually the better gameplay and focuses more on it, which also experiments a lot with, from tank controls to over the shoulder to on-rails to first person shooter.
Comparing stories is also a bit hard, SH definitely has superior stories because as serious as RE got after the first game, it still can be pretty campy and cheesy.
I like both equally, but Silent Hill gets me more with the story-based horror. Even without the more personal story James got in SH2, the series does have a focus on the emotions instead of the raw zombie scares. RE's cheese acting is a delight in itself, and the characters are pretty fun to watch no matter how retarded it gets. Which games are good in the RE series is more divisive than the SH standard of "first three or four", but the closest thing I can think of to a Book of Memories level blunder for RE was Raccoon City.
user I bought parasite eve for my ps1 thinking it’d be similar to RE because I’m a moron
*AHEM*
Never played Dinosaur Office sorry
Silent hill. Better monster design, better music, better story and debatable better gameplay. Plus the setting makes better sense on why their are puzzles everywhere.
Never played Dinosaur Office sorry
it's worst. Shit story, grey corridors, only 5 types of enemies, endless trigger hunting, boring characters, slow gameplay. Why would anyone like this game is beyond me.
Resi has more good games but SH's highs are more radiant.
>why their are puzzles everywhere.
Why? In re it was "mad scientists hired mad architect and then did experiments on him and his family" or "mad and corrupt chief of police wanted to fuck with people"
Resident Evil games are just way better designed. They're actually games. Silent Hill is way more story focused so if the story sucks then the game kind of sucks. Fortunately SH1-4 have pretty good stories.
I tend not to care about resident evil story and more soak myself in the environment, creepy mansion with puzzle doors is a really cool setting if you don’t think about it too hard.
Silent Hill 1 is better than all of RE, but all of RE is better than most of SH
Gameplay? RE
Atmosphere and story/creepytude SH
1 is only the second best Silent Hill
I just have hard time buying that. I know that sounds stupid coming from this genre.
Nah, 1's the best one.
i feel it's works in the settings where people creates viruses to create zombies and other mutants.
Unfortunately after SH4, the franchises lows are also more apparent. Really I have no idea why Konami disbanded Team Silent to begin with.
I believe the team wanted to make The Room it’s own game, but Konami demanded they rewrite it to be part of the silent hill franchise, and then it sold poorly.
Dino Crisis
>Really I have no idea why Konami disbanded Team Silent to begin with.
Cause there was no Team Silent to begin with? Only Akira was on every game, other key members left long before SH4.
I wonder if The Room would have been remembered fondly if it didn't have to live up to series expecations, or if it would be forgotten about.
Then what was the development team that worked on SHs 1-4, and why did Konami suddenly decide to outsource the IP to the west when it'd probably be more costly to do so?
>the development team that worked on SHs 1-4
yeah, there was team created to make only SH games, but it's not like it was same people all along, key members was leaving after each game.
>why did Konami suddenly decide to outsource the IP
They probably didn't like sales and thought that would be cheaper?
Silent Hill 1000%
but in the end I guess at least RE is still alive, so who's really winning.
Why would you kill me?
Konami forced them to leave. The higher ups started trying to force the series into something they envisioned after it became successful. Team members likely left after seeing how Konami was ruining something that they themselves had made.
Also
>Only Akira was on every game, other key members left long before SH4.
Masahiro Ito was on up until 3. I'd say that he was definitely a key member.
Well, to be fair that's not SH's fault, but Konami who have always been massive moneygrubbing jews and jumped ship as soon as they realized pachinko gave them more money.
Also, who here actually found Homecoming fun? I played it a long time ago and it was a decent game, the melee combat even if a bit rough it was easy to control to the point I rarely used guns.
>Konami forced them to leave.
that's interesting theory. I would say just they had shitty conditions where people had to live in office, like Sato, to make those games.
>Masahiro Ito was on up until 3
Ok, other key members left before 4.
My point is there was no some specific group of people with vision.
I want to call you out on that, but I'm not educated enough on Team Silent of Konami to do that.
Fatal Frame
>I want to call you out on that
>but I'm not educated enough on Team Silent of Konami to do that.
Why? What, you want to believe in some Great Team Silent, who had all the talent and vision, so all their games were gold, and then was ruined by greedy, evil Konami, who gave away series to poopy western devs, who can't do anything right?
Is that you reasoning?
Best protagonist, very
yea I know why, i'm just saying it's hard to defend a series that's been dead for so long - feels pointless almost
Because you haven't presented a single fact to back up what you're saying.
>but the other anons didn't
Not the point.
>Fact
I meant to say
>source
>Because you haven't presented a single fact to back up what you're saying.
About key people leaving Team Silent after each game?
>Resident Evil has 20 or so games that are solid at the bare minimum
>Silent Hill has 2 great games
Really tough choice here
relatable.
>Hey babe, what's the hell?
>My point is there was no some specific group of people with vision.
I'm just not sure about this. I've heard some things, that could support this but nothing solid. I can understand that some key players were the heavy hitters with this series, but to downplay most of the team seems silly to me. I'm not going to deny that people weren't leaving, but I don't think you're giving everyone their full credit.
well, since you can't name a single person, who was making those games all along and cared about them, there is no point to continue to talk about it.
a dull mofo who faps to his neighbour through the wall and reacts to a woman lying on the floor covered in blood with "are you okay?"
yea, ok
>I guess at least RE is still alive
seeing how the IP's being raped just as hard as SH during the Homocoming - Downpoor period... I really wish it wasn't.
Didn't Owaku stick around during The Room? He'd probably be the first guy I'd call for a new SH.
>during The Room
no, he didn't.
anyway, he was a hack who didn't even understand sh2, after Sato left the team he wrote that dumb add-on to SH2's story.
Clock Tower
Not so fast leonfag
SH4>>>>>>PILE OF DEAD KIKES>>>>RE4
that's comedy series. CT3 has most bizarre cutscenes. They even put goatse in it.
re4 is better in every single way.
SIlent Hill 3 is best Silent Hill
it's dumbest one, only 4 is worse
You wish :^)
Your first playthrough of a Silent Hill game is a better experience than almost anything in the RE series (bar REmake maybe, I haven't played it yet). However, the favor leans towards RE hard durings replays, as SH never managed to find a satisfying niche for its gameplay. The 'dungeons' aren't really engaging since there's no interesting management of resources going on, nor is it very thrilling when >85% of doors you check will be locked. The only place Silent Hill really matches RE in terms of gameplay is in its puzzles, which are on par if not better really. While I think classic SH is flawed by its unrefined gameplay, it's important to remember its strengths lie elsewhere, and so the comparison between two series here is imperfect. I thought SH1 and 2 had amazing music, beautiful moments, and a lot of other things, but as a whole I prefer RE.
If we're playing this game then Fatal Frame
>generic ghost lady №183
How's it being raped? Seems pretty healthy now.
It wasn't anywhere near as bad as Silent Hill, but it still felt poorly managed with games like Operation Racoon City and RE6
re6 was a long time ago.
do RE fans generally consider RE7 shit? It's the first one I actually really liked but i have a feeling that probably means the old fans hate it
I gotta find a good place to buy a PS2, I NEED to replay these games; is emulation as illegal as piracy?
SH1 > RE1 (although RE1 is more influential)
SH2 > RE2 (love resi2 but its not even close)
SH3 = RE3 (both are boring imo)
RE4 >>> SH4 (The Room is kino tho)
I prefer Silent Hill but I appreciate Resident Evil. At least Resident Evil is still going and getting better recently while Silent Hill is just dead in the water because Konami are idiots.
>(The Room is kino tho)
Are there any tips I should know about Silent Hill 4? I tried playing it a while back but I dropped it cause it didn't play like the other games and I wanted to play something else in my backlog. Might give it a chance again soon though.
Silent Hill 4 is aggressively mediocre and I don't understand why it's having a resurgence years after it's launch.
>second half of the game is an escort mission where you replay the first half
>practically every single character except for Walter is uninteresting and nothing would change were they swapped
>knowing you have massive i-frames on most of your weapons makes combat feel lame
>those dogs that use stock sound effects to the point of annoyance, burping nurses, just poor sound design choices in general
>worst looking of the PS2 trilogy, least scary
don't take doll from Curt Cobein.
Cause we are so starved, not just for another Silent Hill title but for another supernatural horror game that isn't just a game of hide and seek.
>for another supernatural horror game that isn't just a game of hide and seek.
What, you want to beat the shit of supernatural with rusted pipe?
What's the easiest way for me to play SH 1 - 3 tonight?
Yes.
since it hasn't been posted yet.
SH1 through the PS1 emulator of your choice (I prefer Mednafen)
SH2 and SH3 through their respective PC versions plus patches.
hey, it's not sh thread, delete!
Hivemind
it's not supernatural, if you can kill it with the pipe.
Well the darkness is taking over this thread.
Dino Crisis
Do you mean drugs?
Should an orphan of Silent Hill play the Siren games?
They're completely different. Much more stealth focused.
Silent Hill is more of my cup of tea in terms of horror, but Resident Evil is a fun action game with a horror setting. Sadly, though, psychological horror is difficult to get right, which is why there hasn't been another horror game that can live up to Silent Hill 1/2/3.
What happens when a developer that doesn't understand psychological horror works on a Silent hill game is you end up getting a forgettable action game with a mediocre story, music, and environment.
trigger hunting in those games is much, much worse. Story is nothing, characters are shit, gameplay is tedious. No music.
>psychological horro
>in sh3
I love Siren, but if you're going to play the original use a guide to find out the secondary objectives. Otherwise it's impossible to finish. Don't listen to people telling you it's a bad game, I found it to be one of the most engaging survival horror games I've ever played.
Siren 2 improves the gameplay by a wide margin but is a lot weirder, and the Blood Curse remake is a solid game despite the tryhard western serial presentation.
