I agree. Most characters have a great idea that drove their design and story but it always falls flat. They either look cool or are cool. Arthur looks authentic to the time. He's a good man stuck between loyalty and morality. He's as bad or as good as you make him while maintaining a sense of personal growth. There are certain things that story wise Arthur just wouldn't do no matter the player intervention which is both good and a little limiting but I like that at his core he's a good man who just stayed loyal to the wrong person but accepted that he made the wrong choice and rode it out.

I agree. I love how on the outside he acts like a typical dumb outlaw, but his writings in his journal are very eloquent and shows that he’s very self aware. Rockstar struck gold with that journal. It is so detailed. I love the subtle messy handwriting and smudged ink when he writes a about Mary sending her final goodbye letter or just how John is a shit artist and not as literate as Arthur and in shows in the journal.

I would have liked if some of the other characters in the gang were a little more well-rounded to give him more fleshed out relationships to play off of, but as a standalone character he's one of the better ones I've seen in a long while.

iirc there was a chance you could wake up in your pajamas when playing as john, which removes all the holsters and satchel, then you can change your outfit without them coming back (unless you reequip them)
