SMT1 is easy in terms of combat.
Every single enemy is effected by status effects, including bosses. Plus experience is scaled, so if you beat an enemy much higher level than you then you get a shit ton of xp.

How far are you in both. 4 gets progressively easier and easier the further in you go especially if you start using karns. Meanwhile SJ is middling until some late bosses.

beating an smt is pretty easy. Beating everything in the game, in a specific way and fusing all the demons you want as soon as you can get them requires a guide though. I can't imagine anyone blindly finding David, Pale Rider AND Daisoujou in smt 1, much less getting their weapons.
