Well, it's a PC exclusive. It certainly wasn't an "overlooked gem" if you were a PC gamer at the time. It was a very high profile release and was well received. You are very far from being the only person that liked it.

Watched my Dad play it when it was new, and he had played every Ultima from the start of the series. I was seven and wouldn't learn why he hated it so much until I was much older and had played the series myself. I have a lot of nostalgia for the good music and the world but it's absolute trash as an RPG, let alone an Ultima game.
