Being able to present a topic to a group of people is seen a pretty useful skill to have, which is why it's trained; it's less about the content, and more about public speaking.
While we're on the subject of education though, what's up with elite foreign academics always come to US universities to teach? Do they not have capable students in whatever 3rd world shithole you're posting from?

Canadian but presentations are way better for education in my opinion. Forces the presenter to learn at least a bit for fear of embarrassing themselves and if the presenter is either well liked or disliked they'll be given attention to see if they mess up.
