Ever since Sonic Rivals, Eggman Nega has been portrayed as a descendant of Eggman rather than an alternate universe counterpart.
Rush Adventure went back to his original backstory, but Rivals 2 undid that and the "Eggman's descendant" backstory is what Sega runs with nowadays.

A Sonic Foot racing game can easily work, there are korean MMO's that do it just fine like Tales Runner. It just needs platforming aspects that highlight other characters strengths. Just like any other racing game, there would be stats that some characters excel in.
Not all characters would have to race on foot either, Big can ride his bike, the Babylon Rogues can use Extreme Gear, etc. It can easily work but it would take a lot of effort compared to something like a driving game because

They literally confirmed Eggman Nega's backstory from Rivals is his canon backstory, and the Rivals games explain how Sonic and friends still know Silver, due to them being the "first" time they met him since 06 never happened.

The DS version of Colors follows this up by having Sonic and Tails clearly remember Silver, and he end up befriending Blaze, since 06 never happens. They give a small nod to 06 by saying they might have been friends at some point in time as well.

Seeing as Silver and Blaze continue to interact after that in both Generations and in Team Sonic Racing, its fair to say this is all canon.

I got my copy early. The game plays fine, but I'm disappointed about how they threw out all soul. The game feels like a generic kart game with Sonic characters. The tracks barely resemble Sonic stages and the wisps are super bland for items. Feels like every item is only defined by a color. Unlike in Mario where you get bombs, mushrooms, stars and so on you get "that blue thing", "that purple thing" etc. the karts look nothing like anything sonic either.

it irks me that they invented three cool characters specifically for racing games (the rogues) and are adamant about not using them any more.

You can earn points by performing different actions and interacting with your team which gives you credits, and your overall score is tallied at the end based on what place you were in. But the points you earn from doing team actions don't have much effect on the overall score

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't make anything non-canon, just that there is a human world and a non-human one, which is Sonic's home world. The only thing that got changed was Classic coming from an alternate timeline after the events of Generations.
