Games were "dead" from the moment production costs exceeded the average from the PS1/N64 era. Big name studios can't afford experiments anymore. The graphics/production quality arms race has inflated costs to the point that you only ever get the safest games that make it to market. Things like microtransactions, games being sold unfinished to make way for DLC packs, and loot boxes were an inevitability in this climate. The AA game that drove the creativity of the industry is all but dead. That said, there are still smaller productions out there and some decent indie games still trying to push the envelope, but the concentration of those games is much much less than it was in the 90s and 00s. It's not that gaming died, it's that a lot of the passion faded away because it's a risk that's too big to take when every game needs high production values, a marketing budget to rival a small country's GDP, and a guarantee to shareholders that it's going to make back a hell of a lot more than they wasted to make it.
