The role's been whittled down over the years, simple as that. While not video games, DnD was all about clerics or other support roles while being fragile, still having the ability to fight back when necessary. Nowadays when you have a support class it's pretty much all they're good at and if they're means of survival aka other players aren't keeping danger at bay then they're screwed. There's exceptions to this like TF2's medic with melee and gun options that allow him to play more aggressively while still contributing to his team's needs. Also while there's technically no class system, people in Monster Hunter who choose to be more supportive have a number of ways to do so from Hunting Horn, to wide range Sword n Shield, to Bowguns.

Healers in Dark Souls (most specifically Dark Souls II) are fucking tight. I think Faith builds are the most versatile and fun type of class to play and if you spec a bit into Vitality you can go for the armored Cleric route and cast lightning and heals and buffs and shit.

Discipline priests used to have a little bit of that. And Paladins had some judgment stuff where after doing some damage or having a judged seal on an enemy, you'd get a healing boost, so you'd have to do some attacks on the enemy to have max healing power all the time.
