The world design is linear, with a certain degree of interconnectivity, and levels that are supplemented with shortcuts and good level layouts. And of course, the degree of interconnectivity in terms of the overall world and individual levels varies from game to game (BB and DeS with the best level design, DaS1 with the best world design). None of them are truly open world, and that's a good thing, because it's far more engaging to navigate through tight, detailed levels with no guidance or key markers, than looking constantly at a map on your HUD and cruising through vast, yet sterile steppes just to advance to your next objective marker.

The difference is that the description in Planescape: Torment make much better use of that length, to imbue the items with lots of flavor while making more creative use of fantasy aspects, whereas the Dark Souls description reads like some dry Wikia entry. The quality of the prose and diction in Planescape: Torment's item descriptions is a billion times better than the one in Dark Souls, which consists of very basic English. I have no idea how you could think otherwise.
And the developers of Dark Souls don't even trust you to piece together that backstory, since your character knows weirdly specific historial details without even having to bother to research or identify the item.
You just get an exposition dump as soon as you pick up an item, despite your character having no way of knowing those things. It's like fromsoft have no trust in the player so they just spoonfeed them that information, completely destroying immersion in the process.

This is why hes going to die before he finishes the books, because hes going around doing shit unrelated to writing the books, or writing stories that, while they add to the universe, dont continue the plot. If he wanted to produce the universe in books and shit he should've written the silmarilion for his universe.
In the most basic way I can put it:
Non linear games make you work towards the main objective in whatever order you want, keyword order.
In open world games there's no order, you can either do the main quest or fuck off entirely for the rest of the game until you decide to tackle it.
Because it's not a Game of Thrones game and his contribution to the story probably isn't that significant
