In the first AW, you're "character" is an faceless advisor (like in FE 7). After that, AW moved on from have any sort of self insert like character.

I think the first one made some references to the player directly but I don't remember any such things in 2, DS or DoR

colin sensei and to some extent sturm were the only really reliable ways of dealing with sami, but the s-tier cos (colin, sensei, grit, sturm) during the competitive aw2 awbw and wwn client times were always banned by default because they were beyond broken

I can see Sturm but I always just chalked it up to him being the final boss of the game so he was made to be overpowered

Sensei is bullshit because infantry are OP and his power makes free infantry, and since you gain CO meter based on how many funds you take as damage it essentially pays for itself. Colin is bullshit because his units being "weaker" doesn't affect his infantry's ability to capture things when not under attack and using walls of cheap units is stupidly effective in AW, plus free money again.

personally i think grit is the worst offender. range bonus is way too strong for a day to day ability. he could honestly ditch the day to day offense boost for his indirect units and still be s tier if he had the range bonus
colin has such a negligible "weakness" for his units being so cheap. if you think about it in kanbei terms, kanbei gets 120/120 units (regular unit stats for no bonuses or weaknesses are 100/100) for 120% price; if colin were balanced this way, his units would be 80/80; but they are 90/100. colin wins most of his games without ever even using power of money, he just uses gold rush most times.
sensei and sami are THE mech/infantry spam cos, but senseis soldiers are stronger than samis AND he spawns them on cities when he uses his powers
sturm needs no explanation
none of those 4 cos should ever be used if you want to have a game of advance wars 2 that has any semblance of being a "close game"
hint: if you want to have a close game of advance wars but dont want to seem like a scumbag for picking s tier cos, you then pick kanbei

It's a solid AW like game for what it's worth ($20 to be exact). The only real problem I have with it is that the competitive community is very tiny and Chucklefish seems not to care very much about that side of the game. As a result of this, the comp scene is slowly dwindling away.

The campaign is alright but it's super slow to get out of the tutorial stage. The puzzle mode is cool too, it makes you think outside the box a bit and aims to improve your play. The multiplayer however has been pretty shit, there's no ladder system so you can play against drooling newbs one match and play a strategy god the next, connection issues were rampant months ago but maybe they've been fixed but the most egregious issue is how fucking OP pikemen are. Anyone who's played multiplayer will know just how cost effective pikemen are and matches just become a slog of pikemen on pikemen battles.

Worse. Pikemen crit their enemies when they're standing next to other pikemen so walls of pikemen are not only annoying to break through but they also deal insane damage to any ground unit bar your commander.

Ninty is leaving money on the table by not making a waifu focused AW. They greenlit shit like STEAM but let AW die. They know the formula for success for their more niche series is appealing to the ever growing incel demographic (See FE, Xenoblade 2, etc) but won’t do it

ive owned and played each one since the day they were released, 2 is my favourite my far but to be fair i definitely spent the most time on aw2 i played the shit out of that one casually and competitively. i did really like aw1 though and i still like it. aw1 definitely has the hardest campaign (especially advance campaign) out of all the advance wars series games, main example being ac rivals but even the final battle is absurdly difficult if you dont have the right cos.
i only asked that question because my friends who never played any aw game before dor preferred dor, but my friends who played any aw game before that didnt like dor as much as any of the others. was mostly trying to see if the trend was consistent

on this note, we made a close to "dor" balanced version of aw2 as we could get by making everybody perfectly equal in terms of d2d bonuses, and their skills only came out when they activated their co powers. granted its not the same as how dor handles it but its basically the next step up from aw1-3 - dor. it was actually pretty fun, mostly cause it was a new experience in the same aw2 engine but it was mostly a fun gimmick rather than we could take seriously. granted there were 3 of us balancing and changing it, and only like 20 playtesters so it in no way reflects the entire aw community, especially not the dor fans; we just tried to create a bridge between the two fanbases. it kinda worked but we lost interest and just went back to aw2

that being said, why is dor your favourite? what do you like about it that you dont like about the other aw games? awds aside

The change in tone was never a huge issue for me. This was mostly because the NA script was written is a very goofy, campy action/drama film sort of way.

Clauder was never a serious consideration in competitive play because he was so retardely strong, so listing him as a knock against the over all balance of the game was a questionable point in my opinion.

As for why I prefer DoR, it's the game I enjoy the most in a vs setting, that's all really. I like all the AW games and play them regularly, but the improvements are what really hits home for me in DoR. This is especially so for naval maps because battleships have actual utility and gun boats are a fun unit to use (don't forget seaplanes either).

that being said i did like being able to do matches where your d2d shit fit better on certain maps than others
its definitely inherently more difficult to balance and/or objectively less fair depending on the map, but i really liked that because you could choose the map after you lost. 2-1 matches were super common and youd often pick a different co every time; i liked that there was a large number of playable cos where sometimes they shone in certain maps and not so much others. loser pick made that fun for me
actually won a game with flak once as a joke (he picked nell) but im pretty sure the dude i was playing against was really new to competitive aw2

I really think it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. Some people will swear by AW2 like I swear by DoR.

xenesis did make a war room only hack of aw2 with caulder in it actually and he uses co zones properly. man that shit is a blast but really hard

been heavily invested in reverse engineering the game and fucking with it since i discovered WWN over a decade ago, so pretty big. im pretty bad with assembly but ive done some cool stuff like instead of Sturm's meteor i gave him a 3 mass damage super co power. that being said im no xenesis. that guy is the king of AW2 rom hacking
i play various romhacks of AW2 and make pretty simple ones that dont require much assembly often

Thing is, it's impossible to keep producing new IPs and keep producing sequels to every one. It's either let series die after having a good run or stagnate and rehash exclusively.

Nothing to blame but Japan or the games themselves. The series might as well not exist over in nipland aside from Famicom and Gameboy Wars. Everything else is obscure or sold like absolute shit, even compared to FE. The series also didn't sell well enough to justify actually putting serious money into continuing it as a West only franchise.
