Just run to an ammo box and throw down more. I absolutely smother the battlefield in them. I really don't see a point in placing them sparingly and tactically considering battles move around so much and people are dense as bricks. I run around on horseback spamming them fucking everywhere.

There's no p2w, hell you don't pay for anything. All shit is unlocked by playing.

You gain gold by playing the game, and use the gold to buy weapons and armor. The weapons themselves are cheap, but their cosmetic customization can get expensive.
No P2W - you can't even buy gold.

Unlock everything. And you can have every weapon unlocked before you hit level 10, the only stuff that costs more than 500 or so gold is cosmetic.
