I could buy the idea that it subtly influences his mind and helps him believe his delusions but these were always his delusions and fantasies. The idea that everything down to laughing is a poduct of Jenova while Cloud constantly thwarts Jenova and Seph is absurd. The original game kept it as a subtle and ambiguous idea that Cloud was not actually aware his desire to fight Seph was the reunion influencing him, not outright control

And I know the explanation is that Jenova was playing 4D chess. But that’s also not right because Seph does eventually start stringing Cloud along knowing he will pursue just bu taunting and teasing him.

Cloud didn't need to chase after Sephiroth, he only did it because Jenova wanted him to. Ditto for looking for the black materia. Jenova and Sephiroth didn't know where it was and so were using Cloud to find and deliver it to Sephiroth.

He's better by the time of the sequel media but he's a complete cunt in the game proper. I wasn't really crazy about Cait Sith as a part member before I found out how he worked and I really didn't want to use the little shit afterwards. Tactical Cait Sith Action in DoC was fun tho

Actually it makes sense if you consider that Jenova might have wanted Aerith to trust Cloud. So that they could use her to find and then hopefully stop the white materia. Once Jenova and Sephiroth found out that Aerith had the white materia they killed her and could become a hindrance.

The way how Cloud approaches Aerith is also how Jenova wiped out the Cetra.
