Smash by nature really doesn't lend itself to a serious plot of any kind, it should all be character interaction antics like "Wii Fit Trainer starts a yoga class for villains", "Ridley and K. Rool teach Pichu bad words" or "Joker steals Kirby's cake and spends the rest of the season recovering in hospital"

No I disagree. I think there are plenty of serious characters to carry a legitimate story. Characters like Kirby and wii fit trainer are great to have around for comedic relief, but I don't see why that can't be secondary to real plot. The series is already action oriented after all

Maybe have a conflict of interest then. I chose them because they are easily the biggest Nintendo big bads that can still be taken seriously. Ridley is the only one who still comes close but he doesn't really have the recognition of either of them.

Smash is about crossover fights anyway. Maybe have them butting heads the entire arc only for it to end with a grand battle between the two when they realise the heroes might have the upper hand and push finally comes to shove

While the Ultimate roster are obviously part of the Smash universe, the characters who are represented via Spirits are as well, so the cast of characters from which to make a story out of is immense. An arc could be as simple as a high-stakes tournament being hosted in the Street Fighter universe.

Either a cartoony comedy about them all interacting, or completely in-character series story about their worlds colliding. Maybe have the more serious villains like Ganondorf or Ridley muscle the other villains like Dedede out of their turf.

Personally I love Metroid, but this is about Smash. Almost everybody is already out of character anyway so they might as well go all the way for entertainment value.
