I was initially put off by the lack of sprint and only being able to wield one weapon, but it's actually starting to click, although I wish I didn't have to leave Goodsprings.

You can make sound anything bad when you simplify the progression and systems of a game like (you) just did. There's a pretty good feeling of character and world building in new vegas, and in an rpg the feeling that you actually matter should be a priority

Stat progression and dialog/world building is about 10% of the game. The rest of your time is spent autowalking through the desert. RPGs are still games and should be fun outside of reading dialog or the quick dopamine hit you get from leveling up every hour.

grenade rifle, later grenade launcher, and finally the grenade motherfucking machine gun, should be your main weapons, though for the first 10 levels or so this is hard to pull off. you can use dynamite until then. and of course fat man for fun or cheesing certain areas.

the grenade machinegun allows you to shit death all over everything, it is totally broken, you can blow out an entire nest of deathclaws in seconds. it carpet bombs the living shit out of the entire screen if you want. that's not to say it makes the game unfun though, since you really only bother using it against very powerful enemies and ammo is somewhat (but not too) limited, and very few things actually work against a deathclaw before it's wrist deep into your asshole playing air guitar with your intestines anyway
