Persona 1 is underrated. It's simple compared to its sequels but it's a nice little story with great atmosphere and the dungeon crawling is honestly better than the other games, Altus should have developed the combat system to be less tedious and more involved without dumbing it down or changing it entirely into SMT-lite like 2 and 3.

The SMT combat is good(or works, at the worst of it) because it's simple and fast paced. On the other hand Persona 1 combat is inherently complex with the SMT style dungeons and that's why it's tedious. When I've first started playing it I've actually liked all the positioning aspect of the gameplay but in the end the game wasn't balanced well enough and the pacing was abysmal even with PPSSPP. At the end I've started grinding before playing story parts. IMO, the Persona 1 combat would work much better in a TRPG with less random encounters and more story battles, kinda like DeSu but with dungeon crawling. However they just removed the positioning system and kept the encounter rate and long ass battles in P2 and then turned the gameplay into SMT-lite without guns and negotiations in nuPersona. And people keep saying that P1 is similar to SMT while it's actually the only Persona game that tried to add something on the SMT gameplay, lol.
