Did Deadfire flop? I loved it.
How is Obsidian doing?
Are you guys looking forward to Outer Worlds?

>Did Deadfire flop? I loved it.
I don't know if official sales figures were ever published, but it seemed to do a lot worse than the first one at least. Picture related.

>How is Obsidian doing?
The entire studio was bought by Microsoft a while ago, so at least they don't have to worry about their finances anymore.

>Are you guys looking forward to Outer Worlds?
Eh, doesn't look like my kind of game, but I might pirate it to see if it's any good.

It didn't flop but it didn't do as well as the first time. Obsidian got bought so they're doing great. I don't care about Outer Worlds. Maybe I'll pick it up once it's content complete.

Deadfire's issue for me wasn't the "gay fish" the companions themselves or even the shit romance. My issue is every loose end from the first game is promptly ignored.
>1. Woedica
You can empower her or not but regardless she and all the other Gods are Berath's bitches. It was never mentioned before that Berath is the Queen of Gods yet she appears to be so in Deadfire.
>2. Faction companions
Every companion minus Eder and Aloth are linked to the factions. This forces them to act a certain way and disallows you from using many of the depending on your choices. Obsidian should have given us some more faction neutral companions.
>3. Loose ends
Remember Eder's brother Woden? In the the first game Eder is obsessed with finding out why Woden joined Waidwen. He wanted to know what Waidwen said to him. Eder meets Eothas and even Waidwen himself but doesn't bring it up.

Thaos. We were told that what we do with his soul will have consequences. It amounted to fucking nothing but some throwaway dialogue in a dlc.

Souls. What you do with the souls in the first game ends up doing almost fucking nothing. Hylea gets you a cake, Berath gets you a bell, Galawain gets Eder a litle buff and the rest do fucking nothing. Before the final update Woedica didn't even acknowledge you empowering her.

>World Map/Sailing
Ship combat firstly sucks. It's shit. Second the world map is huge but it's filled with...you guessed it fucking nothing.

>Sidekicks
This one pisses me off the most. The sidekicks are the ones with the interesting backgrounds. We have Rekke a man from beyond the storms, Ydwin a fucking Fampyr, an Endings Godlike.

The warning signs were all there. During the development process of the game Obsidian hardly interacted with the backers in their forums or Discord. (1/2)

Instead Josh Sawyer spent all his time talking in the Something Awful forums. The other devs meanwhile spent all their times in a fan discord made by Tumblr. Both those place gave a lot of feedback and the devs replied and critiqued them. This goes especially to Josh in the SA forums. He still goes there now and talks about the game and whines about it failing.

Oh and the main plot. It's garbage. If you cut out the whole Eothas plotline and make your character someone who isn't the Watcher it'd be 100% the same. The plotline for Josh's tabletop game is more interesting than we got even.

>What you do with the souls in the first game ends up doing almost fucking nothing.
Well Thaos DID tell you that you were getting worked up over fucking nothing.

>Hylea gets you a cake

You can argue that the Watcher cared more about not going crazy than about the souls. If Thaos wasn't such a raging faggot and just talked to you it would've worked out for everyone.

all-time peak isn't a good measure at all. basically always the first week, so based on hype.

How connected/important is the story from the first game to the second game?

>Eder meets Eothas and even Waidwen himself but doesn't bring it up.
This is a joke right? Obsidian can't be this retarded.

Not at all. They made Deadfire with newcomers in mind. Anything that is imported from the first game is just flavor dialogue that adds nothing.

The fact that half as many people played it at launch as the first one says more than enough. Non-indie games usually make the bulk of their sales in the first week after release.

Don't forget Obsidian also released the game a full week early exclusively to streamers.

See arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/07/steam-data-leak-reveals-precise-player-count-for-thousands-of-games/ for some hard numbers.

>Pillars of Eternity sold 1,275,530 copies.
>Deadfire sold 203,867 copies.
It flopped hard.

everything related to the gods is so shit in Deadfire
the first game and the expansions spend a ton of time giving them character, then in Deadfire they're uniform childish bickering cunts without any kind of plan
and it's a big fucking problem, since the plot hangs entirely on the gods

>the only white NPCs are backer character
i don't even want to complain since it's set on a tropical archipelago, but it's funny seeing the disconnect between the devs and their playerbase

>Has huge expansive world
>Chooses most boring for first game
Playing it safe you get a pass.
>Picks Moana for sequel
>Almost no meaningful locations
Why couldn't we get Readceras or Vailian Republics?

what's better pathfinder or PoE1 + expansion?

They were childish pieces of shit in PoE1 already, you've just interacted with them less

Pathfinder by a fucking landslide.

No. Deadfire was a kickstarter so every game sold is pure profit.

that's what I assumed

Is the turn based mode significant enough to give another try?

Pathfinder is really good right now. It was a trashfire at launch, but the devs have really managed to pull themselves together and fix most of what was wrong with the game.

The only real issues I have with it at this point is that the companion NPCs are all boring as shit and that the kingdom management is a tedious, unfun minigame, but the rest of the game is great.

I'd take the PF companions over the Deadfire companions any day. I don't understand how Obsidian managed to make everyone but Eder so unlikeable.

I liked Maia and Serafen well enough. But yeah, it's not like Deadfire's companions are good either.

For an ancient being with an accumulated memory of thousands of years he was impressively retarded. Had he a reason to be antagonistic toward you from the start? No, none at all. The player character didn't even link him to the plague at first. All he had to do was give you 10 minutes of his time. Even in the final confrontation that option can still be on the table, if you pick the option where you agree with him.

How did he survive this long.

When I first head about Outer Worlds I was very excited. When I first saw gameplay of Outer Worlds my excitement dwindled but I still planned to pick it up and play it. When they put it on Epic I decided right there and then it was gonna be something I pull outta the oceans

Pathfinder is better in almost every single way than Deadfire but I think I enjoy the PoE style of classes/combat more. But in terms of world, traveling, story, quests pathfinder is 100x better. The only think Pathfinder has troubles with in that department is the companions like you said. Their story quests are not very good or engaging and they do not interact enough with the world when youre doing shit

An unlikable character can still be interesting if written well.

>How is Obsidian doing?
MS bought them, yet they're still somehow sucking Epic cock despite of that.
>Are you guys looking forward to Outer Worlds?
Not really, it doesn't look like my style of game or setting.

They went way overbudget.

Are you joking? They've said multiple times they went way way overbudget. To the point where Feargus had a maximum word count added because of the full VA.

yeh man amazing how with only one real game under their belt and quick spin off cash grab they are the best wrpg developers in the business today

PoE I is good. Not great, but good. It won't annoy you and insult you with it's stupidity like some games do, but neither it's some masterpiece. It's a nice game, solid 7/10. PoE II is fucking crap and everything that made first game good was dumbed down and made shallow, while everything bad made more prominent. How they could also fuck up such an interesting setting is beyond me.

In the end, both are btfo'd hard by Pathfinder, which is - in it's current patched state, since after launch it was horrid - a true heir to the BG series.

What is this.

>What is this.
Age of Decadence in space.

>MS bought them, yet they're still somehow sucking Epic cock despite of that.
Neither Microsoft nor Obsisian has any say in the Epic situation.

Obsidian licensed Take-Two Interactive as the publisher for Outer Worlds (under the Private Division label) before the Microsoft deal ever happened, and Take-Two is the one who made it Epic exclusive.
