How did Nintendo do it?

Sorry but you're not getting my (you)
As typical, Nintendo fanboys have no legitimate response to criticism
Anyone here try any romhacks? Any must-plays besides Star Road and Last Impact?
Also is Star Road any good? Haven't tried it yet and I've heard mixed things.
>>literally no story or character development
this is a fucking mario game
Very simply by developing it with the intent of "changing the system".

Reminder
>literally no story or character development
But this is the game where we find out Peach can bake cakes.
Translation:
>I know you're right but I don't like it
immensely based, although Mario's movement deserves recognition
>Story
>Character development
Dude, just watch tv
>game made two years later on superior hardware has better production value
kys retard
Gameplay > story
It's gotta be fun to play. Who cares about story anymore anyways?
>game on left has countless mysterious elements that make you curious and want to explore (ie, the purpose of the gameplay)
>game on right is based on game on left
cringe
Spyro isn't fun tho...
Oh, but when I complain about games like Metal Gear being story heavy, suddenly "I'm" the bad guy. Well, pardon me for thinking that some genres don't deserve to exist.
>it's another super memerio 64 delusional nostalgia wanking episode
wew
Why are you comparing fucking Mario to Metal Gear?
>PS1
>Superior Hardware
WHAT?
I'm saying it's hypocritical to cry about someone wanting more story when you'll also cry about people wanting less story.
you should learn what a target audience is and not to consume products of which you are not the target audience
wow Comparing a launching title against one that came 5 years later when the n64 hardware was pushed to its boundaries sure is fair!
>Next-gen console release game graphically compared to one released much later
It's not though. They're different types of games.
>actually defending games being movies
>A few good tracks but otherwise generic music
Nigger you what? I can understand not liking the music but I can't understand calling any of the tracks "generic."
8/10 good bait.
Except nobody here has cried about people wanting less story?
This game is trash to play with an n64 controller, the movement mechanics are good but the the controller kills it.
Emulating with a different controller is the only way to play it nowadays
Anybody who disagrees is objectively retarded
>Anybody who agrees is objectively retarded
FTFY
Anyone who thinks Mario 64 still holds up today and hasn't been completely outdone by many newer games is objectively retarded.
What newer games?
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Every 3D Mario game except 3D Land
fucking lol
I enjoyed using the GameCube controller to play it, but I think you're exaggerating how bad the N64 controller is to use. My problems with the N64 controller are related to its lifespan, which is more of a logistical issue.
>t. actually soulless
Great bait
Why haven't I seen a graphics comparison between Quake? It literally came out before M64 and looks a hundred times better.
Mario controls like a tank though, I shit my fucking pants when he's next to a cliff and I have to turn around and he almost fucking falls down the cliff, circles around, and almost does an oopsie because he can't turn around instantly like a normal fucking Italian plumber.
>does an oopsie
Go back to watching Pewdiepie and never come back here, faggot.
IMO it needs some polish to have 10/10 gameplay
>using a modern resolution on a newer custom engine for quake.
>its also a pc game which makes the comparison extra retarded.
come on guy really
Sorry, is that another meme word that has gone by it's use date and is unacceptable here nowadays, you elitist cretin?
>Yea Forums is one person
I thought this was Mario 64 vs. Sonic Adventure the last time I saw it.
>Level design in M64
>Good
OMG YOU CAN SKIP 75% OF THE LEVEL BY TRIPLE JUMPING AT THE START OF THE LEVEL! SO BASED!!!!
>Pacing
OMG YOU HAVE TO REPLAY THE WHOLE BORING ASS LEVEL EVERY TIME YOU GET A STAR!!! SOOOO BASED!! I LOVE REPLAYING THE 34 WATER LEVELS WITH HORRENDOUSLY SLOW MOVEMENT
>Movement
>OMG TRIPLE JUMPING AND DIVING ARE THE ONLY TWO MOVES THE GAME EVER REQUIRES YOU TO USE!!! SO BASED!!! MARIO HAS A SLIDE KICK, WHAAAT??? IT TOOK EVERYONE 20 YEARS TO REALIZE THIS BECAUSE ITS A COMPLETELY USELESS SKILL THAT NEVER ONCE COMES IN HANDY!!!
Every other 3D Mario is better than 64, nostalgiafaggots please fuck off
It was always a normalfag reddit word, kill yourself
This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever read.
Is this a joke or should zoomers all fucking hang
I like both games but Spyro does not compare to Mario 64. It’s leagues better.
>has better movement
>better level design, better atmosphere, and better pacing
Eh, not really
64 will forever remain replayable, and that is because of its movement, you can tell they polished and branched the farthest they could with it. If someone were to make a top10 most mobile characters to play as in a video game 64 Mario would easily make the top5, its just that good to control him, so much fucking freedom.
Mario 64:
>lots of platforms, objects to collect, etc.
>can go in the volcano, can go collect the 8 red coins, can go fight the big bully, etc.
Banjo-Tooie:
>nothing to collect
>nothing to do
>no fun to be had
That was the point of this image, right?
>Has better movement
Try turning around without falling on a narrow edge and tell me what is good movement
>Has Better Atmosphere
While there was a variety of worlds and it is next to impossible to be confused on where you are, at best the worlds could be considered "Iconic" but not mindblowing such as Breath of The Wild
>Has better Pacing
Yeah because forcing you to collect 50 stars to play all of the levels (Except Bowser In the Sky) and entering/exiting a level after every star is very good in the flow of gameplay even though most people complain about the exact same shit in sunshine
You didn't even mention the real flaws such as lack of camera or repetitive task (Slide the ice slide twice), Confusing task
(Having to beat Peach's Secret Slide in a time limit the game never tells you for a second star) and Fighting the same boss thrice with very little changing from them
I hear ya
No idea. It's pretty insane, considering it was the first real 3D game.
Just like Quake nailed the 3D FPS on the first try.
I think a lot of it is just a very fortunate coincidence.
Their top priority in making Super Mario 64 was perfecting the idea of 3D movement and more time went into the controls than anything else. However, Mario games in the past weren't really know for their controls as they were more about going from left to right than doing a multitude of objectives. However, due to N64 cart limitations. Mario 64 couldn't have the same number of levels as its predecessors. To make sure it still had an appropriate play time length, each stage would need to have multiple objectives to complete. This type of game turned out to be perfect for allowing the player to make the most of Mario's new movement skills as opposed to remaking SMB 1-1 in 3D
>No argument
I accept your concession
>a game that came out years later on superior hardware that is modeled after SM64 is better than SM64
WHOA DUDE HOLY SHIT YOURE BLOWING MY MIND
>superior hardware
Confirmed retard. N64 was actually more powerful than PS.
>spyro better than anything let alone mario 64
lmaooooo
>Playstation
>superior hardware
I share a board with these idiots. Shut the fuck up if you have no idea what you're talking about.
So you didn't exist in the 90s. Okay.
>shitty camera
Are you confusing 64 with galaxy.
I like both but using a Spyro image from an emulator is a bitch move.
Spyro looks like shit now, they should have halved the polys on Spyro himself so the environments looked better.
Crash Bandicoot was better
It literally is, though
Blood has better movement, level design, atmosphere, and pacing.
Actual 18 year old zoomer here, Spyro looks great, go fuck yourself.
Most 3D platformers are better than Mario 64.
Cringe. L
the 90s was trash. literally all
>XTREME TO THE MAXX
corny
Ultimate redpill: Sonic Adventure 1 > Super Mario 64.
I hated pop culture from then as well but you're missing out on a lot of fun vidya.
Blood is good but it's hopelesssly outmatched by Quake, both gameplay wise and graphically wise.
more like ultimate cringepill
This is unironically more impressive than anything I've ever seen in Mario Odyssey
>Not liking XXXTREME 2 THE MAXXX
>Implying corny is inherently a bad thing
You're a pussy and a loser, theres a reason Sonic and Crash are more iconic than boring white bread faggots like Nathan Drake and Neo-Kratos
Based and boomerpilled.
it was literally the first 3d platforming game to work, it was revolutionary as fuck to the point that it still holds up today
>Still holds up today
>Has been outdone by an indie game
C
no way, games from decades in the future have improved on the formula? thats fucking insane dude
of course its not still the best platformer out there, but that doesnt mean its not good. also hat in time probably had a bigger budget than sm64 considering the size of the industry now
Not that user but yeah, they have their place. It's not far from the adventure game section.
Blood is way more boomercore than Quake, tho
I'm a zoomer and I love Blood.
>Metal Gear
>Game
Quake has bulletsponge enemies and is exceedingly brown.
>Phony Playshitstationfags still SEETHING over Mario 64 all these years later
YIKES
>but not mindblowing such as Breath of The Wild
Yeah fields and fields of nothing was really mindblowing stuff. I also liked how all 120 shrines had the same visual theme and music.
>Criticizing BOTW on Yea Forums
A fool's errand, Yea Forums will defend AssCreed of the Wild ft. even more empty space to the death.
Cope.
It was made before Nintendo became afraid of making games that some people would be unable to beat
>(Having to beat Peach's Secret Slide in a time limit the game never tells you for a second star)
Did you not read the signpost?
These SM64 camera whiners refuse to take accountability for failing to properly utilize a camera system that requires more thought and manual input from the player in exchange for more freedom and predictability.
What? SM64 is the second easiest Mario game.
>No argument
I accept your concession
This entire thread is basically "no argument" central.
There's no need to make an argument, when you very clearly haven't played the game.
i sincerely dont know why you fags think botw looks good, extreme bloom and mixed bag cell shading with bad contrast and crappy low saturation rainbow of color gamut,it's a fucking mess,if you want a good example you should always choose xenoblade x,botw's visual are fucking terrible and this is a fact, even majora's mask has better visuals than this shit and that's a n64 game, why? it doesnt have the bloom and shit gamma and saturation, that's why,end yourselves delusional fags
Imagine being this mad.
I have though, you still have no argument and never will because you're an absolute drone incapable of independent thought. The four main "dungeons" were awful gimmicks, the only saving grace being how pitifully short they all were. The best dungeon in the game was Hyrule Castle, and that whole dungeon was skippable. The shrines were all samey and were treated as one of two rewards for exploring, the other being the seven million worthless koroks. BotW had some great ideas, hopefully they make a real Zelda game next time to incorporate some of them.
>The four main "dungeons" were awful gimmicks
Once again, you are making it immensely obvious that you haven't played it.
>no story or character dev
Bowser has Peach. Im sure theres a paragraph in the manual you were expected to read in the 90s. What do you want Zoomer, grimoire cards you had to go online to read vague snippets of piano lore, or do you want more cutscenes and QTE than actual game??
>every single character has personality
>spyro 1
loving every laugh
>do you want more cutscenes and QTE than actual game??
Yes.
Well user, I appreciate the honesty. Maybe Sony's PS5 will be all you dreams come true
Big and Amy really drag down the whole experience, they should have gave Tails some original levels or alternate pathways instead of having him just run through Sonic's levels, Knuckles should have had more combat to balance out his treasure hunting levels. Doesn't compare to Mario 64, not even the best 3D Sonic game
I still have, and you still have no argument
>that webm
Wow, manipulating that elephant trunk to one of the 3 or 4 positions in which it actually does something to the dungeon sure was kino
I sure am glad they did away with sprawling dungeons with puzzles and fights in each room to make way for single rooms that revolve around one gimmick each with a shitty miniboss at the end of each of them, the only good one being the lighting one.
is that you John
OoT might be more your speed.
I dont know about better movement but everything else sounds about right.
OoT is mediocre but its less mediocre than BotW
MM and TP are the best 3D Zeldas
