I think so. One of the big things which establishes strong game communities is familiarity. If you frequent a particular server, you get enough time to learn who the personalities are there and can establish comradery with them. People need time and exposure to open up to each other, plus you can usually find a dedicated server which caters to particular niches and people similarly minded to you, meaning that you're even more likely to have comradery with them.
With matchmaking, you aren't connected to anything or anyone. You just drift from game to game playing the same old developer mandated game modes with developer mandated maps. The odds of you running into the same person twice with matchmaking is a lot lower and it takes more effort to deliberately invite someone to your party to play with them. Niche game types don't really get a chance to flourish because you're reliant on queuing up in order to get a game. This results in everyone just queuing up in game types with the most people, because they'd rather play a game mode they don't enjoy than not play at all.

The choices now seem to be:
- Enter matchmaking and suffer a total lack of community. Social experiences with other players are overwhelmingly likely to be negative because you have no control over who you're playing with. This frequently includes players who feel no obligation to behave themselves because there are no social repercussions.
- Join a discord or some other social group beforehand and be prepared to risk dealing with the drama associated with that. Whether it's waiting for a friend of a friend to come online, players who won't play with other specific people, obnoxious community "leaders" or those who demand you enter voice chat when you just want to relax.
- Don't play at all or stick to explicitly 1v1 multiplayer games.
Things were better when playing the game itself came before the forced socialization aspect. Stakes weren't high enough for everyone to get pissed off every game like they tend to in matchmaking. Also, communities formed naturally between players who preferred a similar environment, players were rarely forced to rub shoulders with people they don't want to, something which happens annoyingly frequently in the discord age.
