There are tons of missable items, materia, minigames, sidequests, etc. in FF7. The game doesn't hold your hand at all.

Well it's true. One is more tied to the core story than the other, but both can be missed without leaving the plot feeling incomplete.

Missing Vincent is actually the nice thing to do. It means less people finding out about what an absolutely pathetic patsy he is.

I played it at 14 years old without a guide and figured out almost everything. Just play.

No, don't play the game with a guide at all, is always fun to go full blind in your first playthrough. If you were to use a guide, you'd find out how you can easily break the game from very early. Keep that for the second playthrough since the game is worth 100% it but is easy to miss some stuff like weapons or Materia.

The only one you can miss of 4 in the world is one in one of the lab tanks at Hojo's lab. The rest are scattered out in the world, though two of them aren't hard to find and you'll probably find the last one if you search a plot area at the end of disc 1 / beginning of disc 2 thoroughly. They serve as the game's local Blue Magic, copying certain enemy skills if the character equipped with it survives specific attacks. Knowing how to use it effectively can result in making most major encounters in disc 1 a breeze, but that requires some foreknowledge and fighting an early optional boss that will probably slaughter you if you try off the bat.

I found Ruby to be way harder than Emerald (who was not so bad). I think I did the strat wrong and lacked knowledge of the fight but yea I just assaulted him with summons.

Underrated combatant, probably one of the better ultimate weapons

Swap around party members, keeping the same roster is boring and depending on who is in your party the dialogue will change, which is fun.

Pretty much nothing changes. Aeris is in your party and chimes in with one-liners like the other characters that aren't Cloud/whoever is important to the plot at the time. When you're on the Highwind they had her get airsick and stand next to Yuffie, which was cute though. Most of the stuff that's written is fine and not really jarring or out of character.

If you're playing Arrange version of NT (which is harder), Aeris has by far the strongest limit break of the game.

Matra Magic melts everything early-game
Beta melts everything mid-game
White Wind is the best general-use healing spell in the game.
Magic Hammer, Big Guard, Dragon Force, and Death Force are all amazing in the arena.
Everything else is just for completion but that's still a shitton of utility for a SINGLE materia slot.

Some of the extra optional Arrange fights are really annoying, so having Great Gospel is pretty satisfying. Her ultimate weapon is a very big disappointment, but she's meant to be a spellcaster anyway so it's not a huge deal.

That’s the other thing I heard. The main story bosses have more health than they really need and just makes them long, and the optional bosses are a huge spike in difficulty and many require a specific set up to beat

I’m playing through FF7 for the first time and I feel like a complete retard, but I cannot find the entrance to the Temple of the Ancients. Some NPC said that it was a pyramid in a forest, but I still can’t find anything fitting that description in the overworld.

Yeah, I might have to agree a bit with that. Early on the boosted health is very noticeable, but when you start picking up steam in disc 2 you melt everything really fast like in regular FF7. The optional bosses were difficult depending on what you have, but I beat all of them with Cloud/Yuffie/Aeris and most of them were without using Great Gospel, so I'd say your setup isn't really important.

Physical Yuffie with a Conformer is still the most broken thing in the game damage-wise, avoid that if you want harder fights later on.

There is a lot of missable shit that you get locked out of the moment you move to a different area. Especially in Midgar in the beginning of the game.

Cid's motivation is solely to square up against Shinra. But by the time they're heading to the northern crater, he's in so deep that he's basically committed to follow it through to the end. I think he even has a few lines of dialogue regarding that when he takes over while Cloud's gone full retard.

If they commit to the whole "serious business epic adventure" thing they seem to be marketing it as, she might get cut entirely

Nah I like Yuffie in the party. A lot of the ultimate weapons have counterproductive multipliers (like Tifa’s, Red’s, and Cid’s) but hers is good.

Do you already have the keystone? Take the tiny bronco to the southern continent, you'll have to hug the coast in a weird maze in some places. Otherwise go to the house south of the Golden Saucer and talk to the guy there, and follow his directions to get the keystone.

I got the keystone and had it stolen by that fucking cat, but he told me to go to the Temple anyway.

She's one of Nomura's favorites, as evidenced by her shoehorned presence in Crisis Core and her nagging insistence on being part of the plot in Dirge of Cerberus.

Then yeah, get on the Tiny Bronco and ride the coast/shallow water down to the southern continent. It should be visible from the beach. I think this is the path you have to take but I might have the starting point wrong.
