You could tell Esam was utterly terrified when he lost his first stock. He was absolutely terrified whenever Ike tries to smash. There was no way he could have won after that moment of hesitation.

ESAM made the adaption after that first game where he kept running into Ike's smashes, but turned out to be a bad thing since he got too scared to approach at all. You could tell he was playing terrified whenever he was down a stock.

The problem I think is fatigue. Esam had to be superior 80% of the time while Ike only needs a couple hits per stock. It's because swords are all rounders without downsides. When you look at other character archtypes they have defined strengths and weaknesses, zoners keep people out but can't deal with people in their face, rushdown characters can get in but have no options when at a distance, ect. Fast characters generally can't kill, and heavy hitters are usually slow.
But swordies just ignore the usual conventions and do whatever they want. Lucina is fast, but can rush you down OR zone you out with her safe disjoints. Roy is both really fast and really strong, so he can zone break and kill you at 90%. Chrom has a "bad" recovery but has the best onstage presence in the game and his up b can kill anyone who tries to edgeguard him offstage.
There's a reason that this top 8 has Roy, Chrom, Ike and Lucina and why Olimar went from C tier in Smash 4 to SSSS tier in Ultimate once his aerials gained sword properties. Swords do everything without a real downside and have no defined weakness, you HAVE to outplay the person using them because the character's downsides are so minimal.

Tweek feels so by the book, it's really not that fun, Marss may not be by the book, quite the contrary, but he didn't feel like he was comfortable with Tweek's Roy, it was a lot slower paced than I expected a Roy/ZSS matchup to be, and it never got explosive. You could say the same about Olimar, but I've always felt Shuton was the more aggressive Olimar of the bunch that are out there, and Gluto was extremely agressive.

Just that microspacing DownTilts, trying to get chaingrabs, trying to make the best out of Roy's wet noodle aerials for mixups into something bigger. It's a character like Melee Roy & his emphasis on neutral with a grounded spacing tool that made me realise the limits of Ultimate's " dash dancing "

I like both, but I definitely enjoy watching Foxes, Falcos, Shieks and the occasional Yoshi win more than constant swordies. Jigglypuff is maybe about as disappointing but not always.

Viewership is actually down overall. I remember when Melee would easily break 80k during any tournament with mango in it. Now that it's gone from Evo too I don't think it'll ever get that phat 200k viewership number again either.
Brawl is unironically pretty alright sometimes too. It's slow paced & any kind of advantageous state is kind of lacking or dreadful, but it was the last game that still had a fair amount of both general techniques, and character specific techniques. Characters from Brawl I feel are still more versatile overall than those of Smash 4 & Ultimate.

You can't perfect pivot anymore and movement speed being ramped up across the board makes it significantly harder space your tippers properly.
In melee, he has a miles better tipper and proper movement options to be able to actually combo. He had neither in 4, but everything was so much slower, he could defensively space tippers much easier and cheese out with u-throw kills, db tippers and jab- f-tilt tippers to get stocks
Nobody plays Marth anymore The ones who haven't completely dropped FE have gone Lucina. I mained Marth from the beginning and this was the game I dropped him. (then dropped Lucina because of the slow methodical playstyle you need to adopt with her)
You're honestly right. It usually just happens to be the tournaments I tune in for. Maybe Summit and Genesis just still stick out in my mind, Genesis in particular had a ton of players I really wanted to see winning, but one by one it felt like the more impressive players and characters dropped off while Leo kept going. The finales of these matches always feel hopeless, like an uphill battle is being constantly fought by the one without a sword.
brawl characters were more interesting, but they were also turbo cancer fused with aids that ultimately were a detriment to the game. Pretty much all of the top tiers were busted except marth who was simply unfair for most of the cast

Marth's sword in general was way longer, and his tipper hitbox was massive compared to Ultimate.
Swap out Shuton for Zackray, and I feel like that would be accurate. Shuton might've 6 - 1'd Zackray at Prime Saga GF's, but those were literally the only 2 sets Shuton has ever won over Zackray.

When people were debating lucina vs marth in smash 4, the main thing people pointed to for lucina > marth was that marth tippers were stupidly precise to the point of just feeling inconsistent. This stayed true in ultimate, but the tipper range in melee is decently big enough that it can be hit reliably with good spacing, plus melee has better spacing tools in the first place.

I agree, and I wouldn't devalue these players at all by who they play. I don't think the FE characters are even cheap, but I just always have this sinking feeling for the other guy when it's two high-level players, like they're being chased by a rolling boulder. There's something infuriating at watching Roy tank a really nicely executed boost kick or a setup into a smash attack, then kill at a power percent with a jab into fair (is that a true combo btw?)
I don't fault the players, but I still feel compelled not to root for them.
If leffen is anything he's entertaining, but he's also super knowledgeable and has one of the best competitive spirits among any smash player. The people who hate him are the ones who won't take the time to actually listen to him.

Compared to Melee, yes but sm4sh was so slow, you could space them miles easier when moving around. MKleo made it effortless. Marth only got swapped out for Lucina for top players when against Shiek and Fox.
Marth also had setups that guaranteed tipper confirms for early kills.

Another issue is that Ultimate really lacks a microspacing option. Dash Dancing in Ultimate might as well be " Everyone has Smash 4 Cloud's fox trotting now ", which still doesn't allow for clear spacing within close ranges. Smash 4 also had perfect pivot that MKLeo used wonderfully.
