Probably that and HG/SS.

>3rd gen considered best

That's a hard no.

>no physical split
>having a level curve
No.

no

Attached: 81r7F73-nQL.jpg (1815x1659, 454K)

I'm convinced that Emerald is an elaborate practical joke. There's not a single legitimate cartridge in existence, they're all fakes that don't save.

Based

>Tell myself it's one of the best
>Only played it once because it's my gen 3 hub game thanks to cloning and I dislike playing on emulators as I like transferring stuff forward even if it's just a shitmon with an exclusive move tutor.

Gotta say Black 2. Platinum and Hg/SS suffer from the shit engine.

I sold mine on ebay last year. I was shocked by how rare legit copies were.

>pre-phys/spec split

no

>Wallace as champ
>no E4 rematch teams
No.

I would say it's a three way tie among emerald, HG/SS, and B2/W2

Maybe if these bad boys didnt exist

Attached: 2278F070-B841-47E7-8F39-FD0773D0C9AC.jpg (820x374, 90K)

wallace as champ is a worthy sacrifice to get super steven

More like if these didn't exist

platinum has far too many flaws left over from D/P to be a top contender. It's a solid 4th though

It's only flaw is the saving and not having infinite TMs like Gen 5, otherwise it's on equal terms with BW2.

we could've had both if emerald had FRLG's elite four upgrades

Platinum is good but honestly it still lacks a bunch of shit and you cant beat
>8 gyms
>2 regions

>game is still slow as shit despite speeding up base titles
>worst HMs in the series
>environmental changes in main game slow you down (snow/bog), rest is boring grass or rock
>lol mt. coronett
>still poor distribution even after d/p
>pokedex is filled with ugly cross gen evos and babymon
>battle frontier is worse than emerald's
>contests worse than emerald

gyms
regions
Quality over quantity, Johto''s quality took a dive for the sake of Kanto.

why does this sounds like nostalgia driven opinion?

>2 regions
GSC/HGSS kanto is less of a second region and more of a victory lap since there's absolutely nothing to do except for the one powerplant incident, which takes all of 5-10 minutes. Everything else is just mopping up the other gym leaders, who are really pathetic. Namely Janine, who in GSC has no pokemon over level 39.

>>game is still slow as shit despite speeding up base titles
Over exaggerated, might as well bring out the Blissey webm too.
>>worst HMs in the series
Best considering you only need them once like Cut or not at all like Defog.
>>environmental changes in main game slow you down (snow/bog), rest is boring grass or rock
>>lol mt. coronett
Bitching.
>>still poor distribution even after d/p
It got fixed in Platinum.
>>pokedex is filled with ugly cross gen evos and babymon
Gen 2's fault for creating the concept in the first place.
>>battle frontier is worse than emerald's
Better now that the stupid gimmicks are out the window.
>>contests worse than emerald
Nobody played that shit.

I've never played Pokemon. If I had to play only one, which one would you suggest?

BW2, one of the few games not to fucked over gimmicks or bad design.

Snap

HGSS with the Sacred Gold/Storm Silver hack

Probably not, but I love it because Sapphire was my first game after rejecting the series for years.
Also best cover art, Rayquaza is objectively one of the most god tier legendary designs.
The best poke games are , , , and Emerald. Gen IV would be the ultimate champs if they weren't so slow, but since they are they sit equal with Gen V and Emerald.

I'll have to agree with . It's not perfect, and almost has TOO much content (join avenue and pokestar studios are pointless now), but the majority of it is so good you won't mind. It also has a great sampling of pokemon and is one of the fastest gens, you just can't go wrong.

My copy has saves, and I can even play it on my computer!

No but it was the only Gen3 game worth playing

>only Gen3 game worth playing
FRLG aged better than RSE.

thrifted a boxed copy for $1

is one of them, but the old battery system is a big problem for me because you lose a ton of ingame events

Attached: 1ac94d8d93c2c030a4f03847e4551c16eab7523c_hq.gif (640x360, 479K)

The gym leaders get rematch teams (and can be rematched repeatedly) to make up for it

I still have working copies of red and blue and I'd rather play those any day of the week.

this is the reason i really liked platinum. shit didnt fuck around

Cool, stay in the corner with your shit games.

Gen 4 is too fucking slow

Is this one of those "zoomers" I keep hearing about?

there is literally zero reason to play those garbage games or any gameboy game really other than pure nostalgia

You don't have to a zoomer to know FRLG made RBY obsolete.

D/P/Pt is godlike. Slow saving and slow hp depletion don't take away from the myriad of A+ additions it made. A perfect postgame, genuine difficulty, physical/special split, evolutions for older generation pokemon, the undergound. Shit, I spend a hundred hours just fucking around in the underground with my brother, stealing each others flags designing mazelike bases. It's the quintessential pokemon game.

Is X worth playing or should I go straight to Ultra Sun? I keep hearing that gen 6 is undercooked and it never got a definitive release.

FRLG is my favorite to replay. HGSS/Crystal is fun, too.

>Zoomers
>Caring about anything pre DS

Massive Pokefag who started with Red here, only reasons to play it now over remakes are VC imports, romhacks/glitch fuckery, and Stadium.

It's worth a shot at the very least, it's not as bad as a lot of people made it out to be.

The 3DS games as a whole are rushed, XY is a mildly amusing brainless romp but if you're a collector fag, no reason to not just jump right to US as all the X legendaries are catchable in US and more. Well I lie XY has the power up punch TM for shit like Mega Kangeskan.

Are you using a flashcart?

fug

black and white 2

How do you fix every third version game per gen and both BWs?

Pokemon yellow was the best. Everything else is zoomer tier

I still refuse to replay Emerald, because I have too many fond memories of my Rayquaza and I don't want to give him up.
Maybe I'll emulate it someday, but I'm not replaying my cartridge.

>Platinum
Give it infinite TMs, crank up the enemy levels like BW2's Challenge Mode.
>Emerald
Add real post game content like FRLG's islands, give it the Vs. Seeker, add Physical-Special Split, more Johto mons because I'm not shilling a hundred bucks for a GC and Colosseum.

>>game is still slow as shit despite speeding up base titles
Faster than gen 3.

my favorite part of emerald is when you're traveling that entire section from the route leading up to fortree all the way to lilycove
lots of fond memories there

Of course, OP.

Attached: 1401291328490.gif (500x400, 855K)

>more Johto mons because I'm not shilling a hundred bucks for a GC and Colosseum.
With all GBA games you can get all Johto mons but Celebi

Attached: 1543862936924 - route 120.png (640x1600, 46K)

>With all GBA games
That's the problem. Shit is fucking expensive, plus everyone only wants the cool Johtomons like Scizor or T-Tar.

I regret the first Pokemon I fully cleared being Black and White 2.
Trying to beat Yellow now to start to go through the gens sequentially but it feels slow and like a bit of a chore.

that was some good shit

BW2 is, coming from a hoennbabby

What's "trading"?

Mine still has a save from probably 8 years ago, im still at the battle tower with a box full of cloned pokemon with masterballs

An expensive hassle.

>Maybe I'll emulate it someday
Dude, you're vastly overestimating the difficulty of getting Emerald to play on a computer.

I didn't say it was hard. I just don't plan on replaying it in the near future.

Is it worth it to have Surf on starters

Yes.

Surf is the Flamethrower/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Psychic of Water types. Of course.

these are mostly true

Even over stuff like Hydro Pump? Having two same type attacks feels like a waste, but having only one water attack makes Rain Dance useless

Games don't age. Return to reddit.

I still have my cartridge and black SP from who knows how long ago, 2005?
I sold a whole lot of games as a kid, not too few that I regretted, but Emerald was just too consistently entertaining to let go of.

Mine still saves but events don't happen.

Surf has higher accuracy and more PP

hydro pump is held back by not being that accurate and has only 5 pp. surf is more reliable

>It's expensive to use other peoples' games to acquire Pokemon exclusive to theirs
Sounds like you just hate the fundamental concept of Pokemon.

Attached: c - 1549723627682 - wallace battle.gif (240x160, 1.85M)

>no physical/special split
Makes the game so hard to go back to now, a real shame because it is great. Probably the best sense of exploration in any Pokemon game.

It depends on what your Pokemon is and what they have access to.
Offensive Ludicolo, I'm going Hydro Pump because the extra power is important. If I had Swampert as a choice, I'd do Surf because here consistency is vital.

>the cope boomers tell themselves so they can pretend their favorite terrible atari games are decent

hey that's not a picture of gale of darkness
XD

>Games don't age.
So what convoluted explanation do you have for the phenomenon of jarring gameplay in older titles versus more contemporary experiences?

>Sounds like you just hate the fundamental concept of Pokemon.
OR I'm not going to shill a hundred bucks for another GBA, all of RSE and FRLG, plus trade link

Advance era was damn good, but the DS era was god-tier.

you don't understand what I'm saying
you don't need to buy all 5 games

Attached: 1538214130845.png (645x729, 126K)

It is the most enjoyable game no doubt thus making it the best since video games (and every other kind of entertainment) are about having fun
Anyone who says otherwise is a tryhard who takes video games too seriously

X is the only pokemon game I didn't bother finishing. It's just thoroughly unimpressive all around and insultingly easy. US is better. Though maybe go with X if you want to turn your brain off entirely.

X/Y had the best online functionality though. PSS was fantastic. USUM had.. cutscenes

I don't hate the trading concept of pokemon, but I do hate that now I have to waste so much money to just get new pokemon in the old games. The wifi trading centers introduced in Gen IV was a godsend for the most part.

it's an actually autistic /vr/ meme where people pretend they don't understand context in language and say shit like "b-but the game is exactly the same as it always was"

Not him, but unless you know someone irl who has one of the games, you're shit out of luck. Wi-Fi trading made things infinitely better in gen 4 onward.

Or, you know, you could not be a puristfag and just emulate, and trade between 2 instances of VBA.

>Peak HM cancer
I grew up with this one and i still know how bad it is

Thanks lads, I guess I'll just remove Rain Dance then. Shame, since I think it's a cool move. I was talking about a FR Blastoise, btw

but that was DP

injection, then
>Not him, but unless you know someone irl who has one of the games, you're shit out of luck.
yeah, that was the point
>Wi-Fi trading made things infinitely better in gen 4 onward
it doesn't change that you need to know people.

Attached: eggman_shoop.jpg (521x533, 63K)

Either HG/SS, Platinum, or Black/White. B2W2 are good too, but IMO you'd get more mileage out of it by playing the first one first. Can't go wrong with DS Pokemon though.

Blastoise doesn't need Rain Dance but who knows why your toss up is between Rain Dance and Surf when they do two different things.

Nah, RSE is fucking awful thanks to the water making half the map. You can fit all the legit required HMa into Biberal.

>injection, then
I wish I could but Gamesharks for GBA go for a hundred bucks on ebay.

So we're all in agreement that these guys are the best box legendaries, right?

why wasnt the ending as good as the original BW

It’s like the only game I kept from my childhood. I regret selling my
N64 and ps1/2 but I’m glad I the wits to keep Crystal. Shits in my top 5 just off nostalgia alone.

Only chads get kino endings.

either these or even XY which gets slept on a lot when it has 450 pokemon to choose from, customization, streamlined and current online system

You're supposed to use rods.
Swimmers aren't bad nor are they the only enemy.
The underwater also has items like shards.
Besides, water routes are just that---routes. You use them to get to interesting places like Abandoned Ship and Shoal Cave.

Holy shit, I totally had this problem when I was a kid. I swear I bought at least 2 phony copies of it before getting my hands on a real one which no longer works on my GBA...

because you're gay for N

For Mainline, it’s pretty good. So far nothing has beaten pic related in terms of spin-offs.

gen 3 is third place

help

Shuckles fuckle and suckle

Gold owned Celebi according to HGSS.

It kind of is but the main story not allowing anyone to evolve may trigger your autism

replay emerald if its a itch that needs to be scratch

In SM/USUM, you technically get
>Nebby
>Type: Null
>Poipole

>is pic related any good?
this is such a vague question
for that you will get the vague answer "Yes".
an unfortunately flaw of these games however is that you can cheese through dungeons with the games' equivalent of Max Revives taking up the majority of your bag space. Dying has no consequence and you can ignore the survival mechanics using it.

Explorers is even worse about that.
Rescue Team allows you and your partner to evolve as soon as you beat the main game. Its successor puts this off even further.

If ORAS had the same love care and attention put into it as HGSS they would probably be the crowning jewel in pokemon games.

unfortunately after pokemon went 3d gamefreak got fucking lazy and do the bare fucking minimum just to push the games out the door.

he's emulating moron

>You're supposed to use rods.
Oh boy more useless water types.

It's the only one I played because I fapped to so much gardevoir porn I figured I should play one and I wasn't about to play one without a gardy in it nor did I want to deal with play the same game twice bullshit that these games do.

I got a raltz, leveled it to 20, kicked some ass for awhile, then got bored and never bothered again. Pokemon isn't for me outside of porn.

>they would probably be the crowning jewel in pokemon games.
>Gen 3
Nah.

Here's a better question; what's the HARDEST Pokemon game?

FRLG, best E4.

BW2 Challenge mode, there's no point in discussing this further unless you take it for granted.

Platinum Nuzlocke

I stopped pokemon after gen 4 diamond as tween. Now I'm adult in mid 20s picking up with gen 5 and I'm getting fucked up by the e4 rematch in white 1. I also got violated by ghetsis hydreigon and cheesed a power leveled haxorous sword dance dragon claw to beat him. I swear I didnt suck this bad in diamond. Gen 5 is overleveled hell, worse then gen 4 imo. Also physical/special split is ass for AI fights. Nothing but AI special sweeping you.

Attached: stopped laughing.jpg (298x500, 27K)

>locking challenge mode behind unova link after beating the game instead of just letting the player choose from the beginning like literally any other game
jesus christ

It is, but some of the mechanics feel too outdated so BW2 is my go to Pokémon game.

Fuck no physical/special split
Fuck limited bag space
Fuck limited movepools
And fuck one-time TMs

Attached: When_he_negate_your_trap_card.jpg (300x300, 95K)

platinum by a wide mile

Gen 3 is by far the best, singleplayer and competitive.
>inb4 gen 4 MUH SPLIT
yeah getting one shot by outrage every turn is so fucking fun

Attached: 1555617484371.jpg (1200x938, 205K)

>when BW2 and even USUM exist
Cynthia isn’t the entirety of platinum

I just like Sky for refining Red/Blue while adding new things like the exclusive items and recycle shop. It’s nice I don’t need to carry a TM of Surf to explore certain dungeons. There’s more story to the characters with the special episodes and I enjoyed the extra post game story structure with events such as Phione, and Scizor. The guild setting gave a nice sense of camaraderie and the outlaw board was a nice touch to the standard rescue missions. One thing Sky fixed was keeping your player’s and partner’s portrait even after evolving, a mistake I grew to regret in back in BMD.

Slow down and enjoy it for What it is. It's made to be played slow. Try something like nuzlocke and dont over level

Sorry desu but no split, no GOAT. :)

this is best pokemon game right here

Attached: pokemonxd.png (220x307, 111K)

I have a real one but I shattered the original cartridge and had to stick the circuit board in a black donor cartridge.

>takes 20 mins to get though one battle with those slow ass animations

no thanks

>So no day/night exclusive pokemon.
that wasn't a thing

beside the eeveelutions, I meant
though don't know how that worked...

Because I have Protect as well, and having two non-attacking moves seems like a waste. It's either two water moves + RD and no Protect, or Protect + a plethora of different type moves

I wasn't convinced by the newer titles because of how different they looked and only got to play it on emulator many years later on whatever the hard mode was called.
Great game, reminded me of Pokemon Stadium in terms of difficulty. Required me to use autism strategies against a goddamn AI.

It comes extremely close, but ultimately it has some stuff that really holds it back.

>no phys/spec split
This really just makes things so much better. Pretty much every Pokemon can effectively use STAB moves, and it's seriously retarded that stuff like biting your opponents counts as a special move while a beam of energy counts as a physical attack.

>water routes
People overstate how much this drags the game down, but in a series where a huge chunk of the appeal is traveling around and encountering a bunch of cool monsters, there's really no excuse for forcing the player to encounter the same few creatures for a solid 20% of the game. Especially since there's an abundance of Water types in the Pokedex.

>Battle Frontier isn't as good as Platinum's
Hoenn's Battle Frontier is still fun, but given that Platinum and HG/SS are some of Emerald's stiffest competition along with B2/W2, this is the sort of thing that really tips the scales in their favor.

The whole stretch starting when you surf out of Mauville and ending when you arrive in Lilycove is probably my favorite section of any Pokemon game. No other series of routes better encapsulates the feeling of going on an adventure.

fpbp, throw in Platinum as well, fuck unova though

Try beating Pokemon Stadium 2 without importing pokemons from a gameboy save. You'll get 10 additional IQ points by the time you win the game.

I love Emerald, but Platinum and B2W2 top it

I want to fuck Rayquaza

>FRLG
You mean literally RBY? FRLG had so much potential to have more pokemon variety, and they chose to pander to nostalgiafags instead

It's definitely not what you posted, OP

Attached: 1546723844576.png (2004x2336, 3.31M)

Should I bother playing any title after B&W2?
