I think most characters are relatively equal in likeliness due to our general lack of info. There's no telling who they'll pick for dlc. The only character that I feel has an above average chance is a character from Dragon Quest, most likely Erdrick.

No other character could fit the criteria of a bombshell reveal for DLC. Nintendo is gonna pick him to generate mad interest in the fighter pass overall.

That's not a criticism on other potential inclusions, it's just that 99% are infinitely more hohum than something like Sonic, Cloud, or Banjo getting in. Persona/Resident Evil/Souls/Dragon Quest are all cool ideas but they make sense and feel likely, making them infinitely less hype inducing (and by extension, less free marketing for Nintendo's fighter pass) than a long-shot fan demand from another consoles neck of the woods like Banjo.

Maybe in a second DLC batch at best or the next game, if ever. It seems like Microsoft has been trying to improve relations between Nintendo and Sony recently so I could see it happening at some point. I think he would be fun and I'd prefer more cartoonish characters so he'd be alright in my book.
Honest my only problem with Steve is just that he's ugly, he could probably have a pretty good moveset if given the opportunity. Imagining something like an up-b to ender pearl, then you can press it again to activate the elytra instead. Create walls or platforms with blocks.

Moveset potential is a non-argument because Sakurai can give a plant a unique moveset and then fuck up his chance to make an awesome Stand fighter with Joker by giving him generic moves, a modified limit break, and menu inspired recovery.

I played and enjoyed Kazooie, Tooie and even the Gameboy game but I don't see the point in adding him. Aside from meager DLC money. Neither Nintendo or Microsoft really have anything to gain here. The series will still be dead because Rare doesn't want anything to do with it and Microsoft hasn't done jack fucking shit with the IP since Nuts and Bolts despite having 10+ years to do so. Joker caused waves because of how unexpected he was and the barriers he broke. It helped that Persona 5 was also decently popular too.

Piranha Plant has a unique silhouette and multiple different appearances. It's not as if he had to bullshit any moves for him, you can find traces of anything he does in the games short of it slapping you with his leaves.

Banjo in comparison, his gimmick is using Kazooie. Which is sort of already co-opted by Duck Hunt. Not that they both can't exist together, it'd just make one feel less unique. It's like if Sakurai added someone else with a similar gimmick of Shulk's monado arts.

B-Air: Banjo pulls out his banjo and swings behind him with it
D-Air: Beak Buster (Hold down for bill drill)
U-Air: Flipping animation from the flap flip
Up special: Flight Pad (Limited feathers that recharge over time)
Standard special: Shoot eggs (Banjo holds Kazooie like a gun and can walk for all eggs except clockwork kazooie) (Eggs can be fired while in flight) (Limited quantities that recharge, your current count of eggs and red feathers is down by Banjo and Kazooie’s character portrait)
Shield+Special: Change egg type (Standard eggs are plentiful and about as potent as Megaman’s pellets, fire eggs have a very short duration PK fire-like effect, ice eggs freeze at high percentages, grenade eggs are very limited but are very strong, and one clockwork Kazooie on a long recharge)
Side special: Beak Barge (On land) Beak Bomb (In air)

Ok, so one thing you gotta think about when building a character’s moveset is playstyle.

What are their strengths and weaknesses?

Banjo-Kazooie would work great as a ranged fighter that’s slow on the ground, but really good in the air, with great recovery, and slow Melee kills moves, like the Breegull Bash side Smash. Toss in a variety of Eggs like Clockwork Kazooie Down B (Farts them out) that chase opponents down, as well as the neutral B (normal eggs) where he holds Kazooie as a gun, and now you’re getting somewhere. Perhaps even add a slight chance that your neutral B could be a grenade egg, similar to Luigi’s missfire. Made even more interesting if Grenade eggs can hurt you too if you’re in close proximity. And they make a solid kill move.

For a gimmick, you could even add a collecting mechanic, where items spawn on stage or drop from foes, and they work as ammunition. Though that’s a bit of a stretch.

It’s reasons like these why Steve would never work. He has no playstyle that makes him unique. Abd the gimmick you could give him, digging and building, break the game and are impossible to code into it (in the case of digging).

Because they get to bait the retards that enjoy speculation more than they do actually playing the game for another year.

Those are two completely different arguments though.

The whole "we can't have 'soulless' avatars in smash" or that "steve doesn't represent minecraft" are bullshit arguments that are already debunked with the presence of characters like Wii Fit, Villager, ROB, and Game and Watch.

Saying that "okay Banjo may not be relevant but K. Rool and Ridley were never-evers too and they got in so yeah!" doesn't work exactly the same for a multitude of reasons, and here's why:

- K. Rool, while being MIA for about 10 years is still the main reoccurring villain of Donkey Kong, which is THE series that put Nintendo on the map and is still an extremely relevant franchise for Nintendo. Also, it's first party which should be noted.

- Ridley is the main villain for Metroid and has made cameos in literally every Smash brothers to date. Metroid is also one of Nintendo's "big" series, despite being one of their lowest selling franchises.

Now what you need to realize is these are both first parties, and that Banjo has irrelevancy going AND the fact that Nintendo would gain nothing other than making 30 year old Reddit manbabies scream for a couple of weeks. There's nothing to promote with Banjo. It would serve solely as fansservice, which goes against their comments of trying to bring in new demographics with the DLC and that Joker is "emblematic" of the DLC.

And you also have to consider the fight for DLC is a bit different than which characters are included in the base game. It's a whole nother thing.

Now I know what you're thinking. "B-but Steve is third party too so he's just as unlikely as Banjo". Except Steve has relevancy, he has millions of fans that have never played Smash Brothers and might entice Minecraft players to buy a Switch and get in on the Smash hype. Steve does appeal to new demographics. Steve does belong to the best selling video game of all time. Steve is beloved in the west AND Japan and is more relevant than ever, etc etc.

I think they're pretty likely. Smash has an old fanbase, it started in the same gen as Banjo-Kazooie. They want their DLC to sell and be exciting for the fans, and they know there is a lot of market crossover with Banjo fans. It seems like a really good choice no matter how you angle it.

I also think there was a lot of crossover between the two fandoms, seeing as how they were both out of work Rare characters, and I think after K.
