It's honestly so fucking hard to play, from opening strategy to fighting and trying to not make a really dumb move. Even scoring and endgame can be tough. 9x9 boards are good to learn on though.

They also dedicate their entire life to this junk. Don't aim to be a top player, just aim to git gud. A monkey can git gud at chess with the right time and mentality.

If I remember right, any formation of pieces is captures if completely surrounded by the opposite color, with no empty spaces bordering the formation at all.

How it works is if a piece is completely surrounded, then it gets captured. However, your pieces that are next to each other combine together into one giant blob piece. And as long as it has 1 free space next to it, then it's good.

You're also allowed to place a piece anywhere on the board, as long it it wouldn't be captured immediately.

So yes, that's a valid, but very poor move,

I downloaded a chess app on my phone and it’s fun but makes me feel like an absolute retard. I can consistently beat the pc at lvl 4/10 but I always ALWAYS get fucking dunked on in like 8 moves when I try 5/10. Black killed his own t shaped group there because it only had one liberty after his move (a single stone has 4 liberties adjacent to it and stone groups can be formed by connecting adjacent but not diagonal stones that then share liberties) White can play there because the order/priority goes to white since he was eliminating stones with the move.

Also another reason why that was poor was because he destroyed his "eye" formation nearby. Normally these are safe, as you opponent can't place a piece in the middle; and even if they surround the formation, it can't be captured because the empty space within.

You actually can capture those white stones since that's a single eye. The attacking black stone is given priority enough to kill the white stones. That's why you need two "eyes" to live in a group since black can only attempt to attack one group per move
