Mario & Luigi RPGs

So I wanna play through this series.
I beat the first two years ago but haven't played much since. Should I play the remakes or the originals of Superstar Saga and Bowsers Inside Story?
I know they changed the visuals and added the Bowsers Minions thing but is that all that changed?
Is that new minigame thing worth playing? Also feel free to discuss the games in general or just shitpost I guess.

Play Bowser's Inside Story on the DS physically.

Ignore the rest. The franchise only goes downhill from there. You haven't missed much besides the best entry in the series.

The remakes are pretty much identical to the originals, do whatever

I actually played a bit of Paper Jam.
Never beat it though. Thought it was ok but the big gimmick seemed to be the paper construct battles and those got dull pretty fast. Wanted to try out BIS for a while now though so I definitely plan to play that.
Cool.

BIS is objectively worse on 3DS. SS on 3DS is give or take. A few minor visual changes on characters might be gripeworthy, and some remixed tracks lost their soul in the transition, but its still a solid package and the visual engine is nice. The gameplay is far better and modernized too. Play SS for more soul and nostalgia, play the remake if you never played the original.

>BIS is objectively worse on 3DS.
How so?

only bowser inside story and superstar saga are worth a damn, but dont play the remasters
bowsers minions is pure trash even if you like the updated graphics
also they fucked up the ost

theres no contest

Play the SSS remeake, it's beautiful and runs at 60fps,even in the old 3ds,also it had the fastforward button so you can replay it without problem

Bowser's inside story remeake is also really good but I like the cartoon style, unless you want to play the original for this you can play the remeake who adds the fastforward button, fixes the annoying carrot minigame and also add one of the most well written Mario RPG story (jr journey),also some bosses are harder in this version + some Bros attacks uses more BP so you can't spam them at all

Dream team is beautiful and one of the best in my opinion but it's really slooooooowwwwww,if this game have the fastforward feature when it was released then It would be perfect

Paperjam is ok,but the worst in comparison

What's wrong with the BIS remake?
Do people not consider Partners in Time to be worth playing? I remember enjoying it but that was a long time ago.

superstar saga and bowsers inside story are fantastic games. partners in time and the paper mario one are ok. dream team is not good.

Friendly reminder that each game got better in terms of gameplay with each entry.
Paper Jam > Dreamteam > Bowser inside story > Partners in time > Superstar Saga.
Dreamteam almost had perfect gameplay, but fucked up with the forced gyro controls.
I don't give a fuck about your story, characters, or """"soul"""". I care how each game played and superstar saga is barebones as all hell.

just play bowsers inside story, and skip the rest

Items will never replace the bro moves for me

What’s the consensus on Dream Team? I’m about 2 hours in and I’m kinda bored so far. I loved BiS and even though I have Superstar saga on GBA and PiT I’ve yet to play them yet

Does the SSS remake get rid of the escort part in the desert? I don't think I ever finished the game because of that.

>Bowser's Inside Story
Regarded by many as the best game in the series, playing as Bowser is FUN. Nothing of real consequence was added, I would say just play the original game, some would argue it has the superior art style (I agree)
>Dream Team
Gets shit on for having too many tutorials, when in reality there's not even that much difference with the amount of tutorials in the previous one. Longest game in the series too, though maybe a bit too dragged out in some places. Gets more hate than it deserves, it's still a great game.
>Paper Jam
Has the best battle gameplay in the entire series, but sacrifices pretty much every other aspect of the game in the process. Paper construct gimmick is boring, as are all the toad minigames. Worth a play only if you really have an urge to play a new one of these.

No Geno no buy

Is paper jam? If it’s anything like Sticker Star I wanna stay away from it

it's boring as shit. fitting they made it based around sleep, the 2d sidescroller parts are snoozeworthy

Plot-wise any order is fine. The gameplay does improve over time, but I doubt you'll find any of them bad to the point that it will sour you on the entire series.
Only thing is, Paper Jam is really unimaginative when it comes to the plot and setting, but it has some of the best quality of life improvements (fast forward for cutscenes, tutorials are sent to a guide instead of being forced upon you and so on).

>Objectively
>Lists subjective reasons
>Completely ignores entire bonus game, which while not being that good, is still objectively more content

Not exactly sure what you're asking but I've never played Sticker Star so I have no idea if the two are similar.

If you play the RPGs for the story instead of gameplay then it is on par with sticker star, otherwise the gameplay is the best in the series

No, it has nothing to do with Sticker Star.
It's like a regular M&L game, but you also get Paper Mario who has multiple copies of himself in battle. You can do stuff like hammer multiple enemies or do a long string of jumps with the copies, and whenever he's hit he loses copies before getting damaged.
He's a really neat addition to the combat.

Why does no one talk about Partners In Time? I liked it a lot

It has a very slow start, it's the longest game in the series, sometimes to its detriment. It only gets good once you get past Mushrise Park, but it really becomes a lot better the longer you play.

*is paper jam good

I agree, although I would say that I liked paper constructs better than the giant "fights" from BIS and DT. I'd rather have no such gimmick in general obviously.

Play the 3DS version of BIS. It’s literally a better version.

The items as special attacks isn't a very good mechanic, as once you buy enough, you just spam them without having to worry about managing SP/BP. Other than that though, it still has the best story (Although that isn't saying much), some of the best world building, and some solid music. I still love the game a lot, but the mechanic does kind of suck.

Don't overreact there, user. While there's no original characters to speak of and the plot itself is pretty barebones, the character interactions and dialogue are really good. Sticker Star had barely any dialogue at all. It's so much worse than Paper Jam.

The BIS remake is objectively better in every way, what the fuck are you talking about? The only thing I can think of that is worse than the original is the final and regular boss themes.

The new themes they added are amazing though so it balances out.

Also it got rid of blowing

Dream Team is worth a playthrough

Wait so is
pic a bundle of full games?

Bowser's Minions is more of a minigame but it ties into the main M&L game and explain some plot points

Don't listen to the majority of retards ITT OP, they don't know what they are talking about.

I played every game in the series including the remake, also replayed original SS and BiS recently, here are the facts:

>SS DX

Objective better than the original in almost every way. The artstyle and sometimes OST is debatable, but the massive amount of QoL improvements cannot be ignored. Unlike many Nintendo remakes it also keeps the smooth 60fps gameplay from the original and the animations look great. People will tell you that the characters aren't as expressive and shit but that's objectively false really, at least 90% of the expression and SOUL is there. While the original is still good today, you should just play the remake because it's better.

>BiS DX

It's shit and you should play the original. Why? Even though all the content from the original is there and the OST is good overall imo, 30fps + tedious loading times ruins the gameplay. I don't know why but they managed to massively fuck up the performance. 30fps makes the game plays and feels worse than the original and having to wait like 7 seconds everytime you enter a regular battle is disastrous and unacceptable. The biggest WTF here is that Bowser's Minions came out a year prior and it had smooth 60fps and no problems with loading times. If it played at 60fps and had reasonable loading times, it would be a good remake, but as it stance right now you should just play the original.

Not that user, but they changed a bunch of tiny, seemingly insignificant things that I really don't like, especially in the final boss
>Dark Fawful doesn't laugh maniacally when he forms
>Doesn't yelp in shock when he falls to the floor
>Music doesn't stop dramatically for the final hit
>Dark Bowser's isn't cracked/falling apart after the fight

play all of them unless you're a dumb nerd

Play BiS. If like than you can check other. You miss nothing released before it or after.

Don’t listen to this user. He’s retarded.

Dream Team is the third best M&L game you pleb.

Someone finally said it. I honestly can't wait til we get a Switch game. Imo if its like Dream Team, but with the improvements that PJ and the remakes made. It'll be the best Mario RPG to date.

This user speaks truth.

Beyond them, basically all the Mario and Luigi games are fantastic, all are worth playing, and when anyone says one is bad, they just mean in relation to the others. Partners in Time and Paper Jam are probably the *lesser* of the M&L games, but still worth playing, especially if you liked the others.

M&L is honestly probably the second most reliable RPG series behind Dragon Quest.

where my gba niggas at? original superstar saga was the shit

Can we all agree though that the 3D battles made the series better? Was disappointed that the remakes lacked the 3D battles of DT and PJ
