The characters were great, gunplay was fun if not a bit repetitive, hunting and s'plorin' was comfy.

I just met the voice actors for Arthur and Dutch yesterday at a comic-con, and during the q&a session you could tell how much love these people poured into the characters, how meticulous R* was in their pursuit for every perfect minor detail. Sure, it gets boring once the story is over. And yes, the online is still a goddamned mess. But what's there is an incredibly crafted game world and narrative that stands second to none within the genre.

I've heard Yea Forums circlejerk about this game for a year and recently played through it. It's very pretty but I have no idea why some people gave it positive reviews. People who shit on TPP or Naughty Dog shit gave this glowing reviews without even mentioning that the story is the exact same format as any other walking simulator. It's actually very similar to every other modern playstation exclusives.
I didn't hate the game but I didn't care for the story.

So you're claiming suppression and reticle sway, which is a problem in FPS games like Battlefield, input delay, and pressing RT twice just to fire, makes for smooth fluid gameplay. As far the online goes, not playing in first person against other players puts you at a huge disadvantage. Auto aim and Dead Eye exist, because the controls are so bad.

An update on the fanboy situation:

The fanboys went dormant on Yea Forums and other forums within the past few weeks. This is mainly due to the online playing like absolute shit, and nothing of worth to do in the single player. Even some of the more laid back, non hostile fanboys quickly realized that hunting, fishing, etc were all worthless as money doesn't mean anything, and the single player can easily be completed with your starting weapons. They could no longer use the "beta" excuse either, and the population dropped even further.
Since the online is officially out of beta testing, the fanboys are back to defend to their favorite developer, and swallowing their corporate load in the process. Unfortunately for them, the disconnects are much worse, the animal glitches still remain, and the hours of grinding for ability cards went to waste as the cards are now rendered useless.
It's very difficult for an anti consumer/ anti player game developer like Rockstar to milk a game that can't implement flying cars or aircraft. When RDR2 officially dies in a few months time, the fanboys will go back to GTA5 to ruin everybody's CEO/MC business runs, and you won't hear from them until GTA6.
In the meantime, the fanboys will do what they always do: screech, holler, act pretentious, the whole nine yards again. Their voices and invalid opinions will slowly dwindle as the days go by.
Most of these fanboys are children and mentally disabled adults, so take it easy on them. Their brains are already hooked in the capitalist lie of "they care about me, the consumer".

Most people complain about the controls, because that's the weakest part of the game. Forcing the player to move slower with input delay, or forcing him to press RT twice to fire, is bad game design. This is the equivalent to making enemies bullet sponges in games for artificial difficulty, which is also a problem in Rockstar games.

It was a good game. You need to be able to stomach the slog though; Saint Denis through to Guarma and back becomes real drudgery after a while, kept alive only by a handful of excellent missions/story moments. Doesn't help that Rockstar made travelling around the map more tedious than the original, and seemed to care more about pointless incidental details, herb collecting in the open world and pseudo-survival systems than fun game design.
Narratively, it's an absolute peach. The shooting/cocking is tactile and satisfying. Being able to fan-fire on command and deadeye quickdraw from the holster are god-tier additions. The music is incredible at times. There are some great missions.
Everything else is just kind of boring, and feels like R* are sniffing their own farts with some of the inane shit they waste devtime adding just to look innovative

I still play it now and then, it’s comfy being a frontiersman exploring the map and completing the challenges. It’s really relaxing playing in first person just setting up a camp by the river, fishing and picking herbs for medicine.

It's an ultra immersive cowboy sim that lets you roleplay in the old west. The open world is absolute top notch in Red Dead and even though the game has some issues like the mission design being restrictive, the story and the open world alone make it super good immersive experience.

everoone says the story is amazing, but they never say why. they just say it and act like its undeniable truth. personally i think the story was really weak, its basically one ridiculous segment after another with little connecting threads between them, and the guarma chapter was beyond ridiculous, not to mention a really overdone, unneeded subplot with the indians in chapter 6. arthur is also an even worse version of the "woe is me" archtype that everyone loathed with niko. in my opinion, it might be rockstar's worst story to date. it feels like it was written very haphazardly by a bunch of different scripwriters.

RDR2 has the most un-intuitive controls of any AAA game probably ever. Equpping items from the wheel feels like total shit, and even after playing for hours you still have to look at the bottom right because the buttons are never really obvious for the context. It's hard to think of another game where even simple actions feel as convulted as in this game.
