You play as a cute girl and craft items through alchemy, travel to areas to gather materials and battle enemies, there are other characters you can form a party with and friendship values that lead you to unlock their story events, you're generally rather free to choose exactly what to focus on as you progress through the game and there are multiple endings. The previous games this one is a sequel to had (really lenient) time limits, but this one doesn't.

Also comfy and with good music.

It’s very fun. Something that can only be experienced after you work so hard and are rewarded for it. Extremely rewarding.

It's a bit of weird case because Rorona is one of the very few heroines in the franchise where she has a strongly preferred heterosexual pairing. They'd never get away with giving Totori a canon love interest but Sterk's really popular.

The sorting and filtering options are good enough. What are you having trouble finding? You can filter by color or by traits. Sort by quality then quantity to put them in order of quantity with the higher quality on top.

It merely added a ton of grinding to get through the main recipe unlocks, made the combat a lot worse, and added a new synthesis system that didn't even get good until the sequels. It's not terrible in it's own right, but it's a huge step back from any other Atelier game.

Nelke is the closest thing to it I've found, feels like playing as a less smug version of Alouette. Also I prefer the sort of ys like dungeons of Recettear to the path walking with random encounters in Nelke.

Lulua is the 4th game in the Arland series but the stories are not that connected between games. If you start with Lulua you will probably miss some references to the older games and some of the cast is from the older games but it's probably not a bad one to start with. It's only really some of the characters that carry over to the next game, like in Lulua the main characters mother is from the first game in the Arland series

Can't speak for the gameplay, but it's a sequel to an earlier trilogy and probably has a lot of callbacks. I'd recommend playing the Arland Trilogy DX games first, although those do have the time limits you're worried about. They're not that difficult- you can probably get everything within a single New Game+- but you may need to use a guide for some requirements, especially for Totori (which is the only one that actually had a True End iirc anyway).

In the other games they expect you to play previous games but they're still pretty self contained.

The Plus versions were enhanced ports for the PS Vita but starting with Sophie they just did a multi platform launch. There will probably be a Dusk DX collection before long on PS4/Switch/PC but they've moved on from remakes.

The stories aren't connected but the world is the same and characters from the older games are still around

You get a better experience if you played the previous three with the references, but it's Lulua's story.

Not in Nelke. Only the titular alchemists from each game and the new characters can be used in battle. The rest all show up as a character that can be set to run a shop but even side characters that were alchemists will say something like they left their mixing staff at home and they can't do it.

I don't know, I played Meruru when it came out and haven't really been able to play any Atelier games for a substantial amount of time since.

For Rorona, everything, Plus is a remake that fundamentally changed the game's content and balancing of its systems, plus it added a postgame story set after Meruru via time travel. For Totori and Meruru, the Plus versions are just updated rereleases with a few more endings and some balancing. The stupid part is that while the original Meruru introduced several UI and quality of life improvements that were brought over to Rorona Plus, said improvements did not make it into Totori Plus so the middle part of the Plus (and DX, which is identical) trilogy is slightly more archaic in terms of convenience.

Best endings are impossible on first try without a guide but you're not supposed to try for them on your first playthrough, they're meant for NG+

NG+ is piss easy as fuck and you can get whatever ending you want

Ah, you're right, but that's the only thing exclusive to Rorona DX. Stuff like the advanced sorting/filtering options and the way the upgrade items work are the same in Rorona and Meruru while they're less advanced in Totori.

Depends on what you mean by best. No way can you get all the endings on first go. But as far as not getting bad ends goes:
Totori is very possible, just stay busy.
Rorona is harder, but still doable.
Don't know about Meruru. Never finished it. This one definitely ramps up the difficulty towards the end.
The trouble is that they all start very comfy and ezpz. They keep that general feeling throughout the story. However, the time limits get progressively less generous, and the tasks you have to do keep getting harder and harder. It can get pretty frantic towards the end. Not comfy at all.
Now, NG+ is basically cheater mode, as one would expect, and makes things a lot faster.

Meruru is the easiest of the three. I'd say getting a proper ending for Totori is harder than Rorona because Rorona doesn't have a stone wall of a boss to straight up block a bunch of endings to you if you can't beat it in time.

Avoiding the bad ending in Meruru is really easy, you'd have to be retarded not to hit the first development goal and defeat the Airshatter. However, the rest of the game layers several more endings and ending requirements on top of it for even better endings and the best one can outright only be got in NG+ since Kingdom Rank X isn't obtainable on a first playthrough, so it's not difficult to obtain a good, or even great ending (just not the best one) on a first playthrough.

Seems pretty common with Japanese developers, Falcom pulled that with the Trails series too

A bunch of characters grew up and got unique models in CS3/4 but you can see palette swaps of their old models just wandering around towns

I find it particularly weird here because the graphics have been completely overhauled since the original Arland trilogy, they clearly remade those models from scratch yet still used the same designs.

That's actually what happened with Falcom too, they probably just built up from old assets instead of starting from scratch.
