.3ds is used by emulators and flashcarts. It's the basic ROM format.
.cci is a cart-dump that has online data still in the file. They're basically identical to .3ds though.
.cia is the digital game format and are used by programs on 3ds homebrew for digitally installing pirated ROMs to a hacked 3ds. They can't be used by Citra though.

It holds plenty of water, you aren't financially rewarding the cancer that is digital distribution and all the negatives that come with it, you get an official physical copy and on PC the standard editions used to be better than today's collector's editions until Valve had their way and made PC digital only.
Just having the option to pay for a game digitally has ruined gaming, it allows for what is plaguing the industry today such as rampant DLC and mtx, games being intentionally released unfinished or unplayable without a patch because they can easily patch it through whatever platform which further encourages them to be released that way, being charged for a download, having to go through some console wannabe platform to legally play games, easy access which means more casuals play games which means games are made for them which means lower quality games, etc. Digital distribution should not be paid for, don't care about physical copies? Fine, then you should be exclusively pirating. Even if you exclusively pirate you should want all games to be sold physical only because that has already proven itself to be the best environment for great games to be made and you'll still be able to pirate anyways.

Physical on all the systems is now just a DRM mechanism that lets you play your digitally installed copy anyway.

I've had a few games on console both in physical first and digital later. Their file sizes and loading times are identical. The only difference is one boots when it checks for the disc, the other skips this step.

I genuinely think that if companies went back from releasing DLC to physical only people would riot. Also a lot of PCs nowadays don't have disc drives and I don't see many people going back to them or companies releasing games on usb drives.

DLC is still very much possible on consoles that use physical media, the same with patches for broken games. It's the internet to blame; even if games were only physical this would still happen.
Plus, many low-budget games could never have released physically to begin with, and optical disc performance is very poor compared to modern SSDs.

Dark Future: Blood Red State. Haven't played it yet. I'm not expecting much though.

Before that I pirated Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. It's an ok game. Not great, but ok. It's basically a solid FFT-style SRPG except the writing is bland as fuck and there's not really enough variety in the various classes IMO (though I haven't unlocked all of them yet). I also dislike these leveling systems where you have to spend most of your time in a certain class to get the best gains and then switch to the class you actually want in order to unlock skills. Fortunately the game does have a reset levels option unlike most similar games, but that really just adds more grind. Despite all that I still enjoyed it enough to buy it if it goes on sale.
