Data caps are mostly put in place by shitty ISPs with a monopoly in a given area. Caps are the kind of thing you can only get away with when you're the only guy in town offering internet.

Certain ISPs like AT&T, Comcast, and I think Times Warner give you a limit on how much you can download. A couple of years ago it was 100 GB a month, nowadays it's 1 TB a month (Which is still pretty easy to reach). Once you go over it you have to start paying a fee every X amount of GB. When it was 100 GB a month every 10 GB after that until the monthly reset was $20 if I remember right, now with the 1 TB a month limits it's every 100 GB after.

Because ISPs in most states make deals with each other they usually just screw their consumers over and it's not like you can switch to someone else. Or you simply don't have any other decent ISPs in the area and you have to deal with the situation.

Shitty ISPs sell way more connections than they can actually support so they ration the bandwidth to make up for it.

The best part is most of the bloat probably comes from uncompressed audio or some other bullshit that could easily be trimmed down. Hell, it probably includes 4-5 copies of everything in a different language.

America is huge, largely rural, and infrastructure costs money. ISPs could build proper internet infrastructure could be built but why bother when you can just jack up the prices and drown in money? The government could get involved too but then the ISPs wouldn't make any money.

adding to that, Im from NC and I think they tried to do something in regards to clamping down on piracy or something a few years ago but a buddy of mine whose dad worked for them claimed they got a fuckton of complaints from customers and they shut the plans down.

Unironically this You're free to go anywhere you wish at any time of the day (well it's extremely unlikely to get mugged / stabbed). You're free to get sick and get quality medical help. You're free to stop working and get university education while being paid to do so. You're free to have kids who don't bankrupt you since their major expenses are taken care of. Our ISPs don't have data caps and fiber is relatively cheap where available.

The only thing that isn't free here is alcohol but you can always DIY.

I think They're trying to get fiber up in my area because we have 3 universities, 2 of which that deal HEAVILY with major med-tech/cancer research in my city that are trying to get that going. I'm looking forwards to seeing that that plans out.
