I like devs with that mindset but often I think having an official link to a free version is going overboard. The sheer convenience of it would honestly probably increase piracy. If it's not advertised people likely wont check official sources to pirate it. If it is advertised more people will snag it. I think the best route is for the dev to anonymously upload a clean version of the game on torrent sites on release day.
