It was buggy on launch but they patched it out pretty quickly. Is the singple-player FPS/RPG/Adventure genre just dead?

I mostly just hear about how people hate it. I loved it though. Put 45 hours into it before I finished it. Amazing atmosphere. Right up there with Alien Isolation as one of the best games this gen

Probably because none of that is true.

>>by Arkane Studios, acclaimed makers of Dishonored series
by making 1 dishonored game
2 sold like shit
i guess its cause it doesn't really trend new ground
but probably due to single player games generally dying
i hope it was at least hope it wasn't an entire flop. i mean they reused a lot of assets so probably wasn't that expensive

Because Prey came out like 15 years ago, it was an okay game but there wait was too long.

Bethesda didnt know how to market it. I didnt even know it was by the Dishonored guys until after it came out. Re using the name Prey only caused more confusion.

The marketing was garbage. People thought it was yet another shitty reboot, when it had absolutely no relation to the original Prey. The trailers also didn't really do a good job of conveying what the game actually was.

It's great, I really liked it!
It caused my laptop to overheat so I can't play it anymore...

some people on Yea Forumsee hate it but the majority say it's one of the best games in recent memory (at least in prey threads)

I'm in the latter camp myself

>Is the singple-player FPS/RPG/Adventure genre just dead?
the single player genre is dead
only something that has as much marketing as an exclusive title from Sony or Nintendo
or something that has a lot of hype around it like DMCV or Kingdom Hearts 3 could sell

no way DMC6 will sell that well if it insists on being a single player game

We really don't know the budget of this game
but Single player games can't really survive as AAAs
Bethesda should make their games the way THQ expects their games to sell, they apparently were actually happy with how Darksiders 3 sold
Just go AA

>marketed like call of duty in space
>wonder why it was overlooked
tell your boss at zenimax to fire the marketing team

it's mostly competent but not great and it fell off in the last third

friend of mine said it wasn't worth full price or something, heard him talk about it a year later and he said it was alright, pretty close to bioshock in space. i might play it some day.
i was real upset when i found out prey 2 was in dev hell. even more disappointed when i found out they were just gonna reboot instead. i was teased hardcore with a space bounty hunter game featuring mirrors edge style chase sequences and cool gear. i'm still mad and that's the reason i still haven't played nu-prey. look at this shit
youtu.be/ufikwk7_AD0

It isn't that similar to Bioshock. I wish people wouldn't describe it like that. Bioshock is very much a first person shooter with powers. Prey is basically a survival horror game. Especially on higher difficulties, you won't want to face enemies head on

Great mechanics and gameplay with an interesting plot let down by boring enemies and an aesthetic that is unappealing for some.

Dishonored 2 was really fucking good as well, but it had bugs on release which tanked Steam reviews for a while. It was also really well received by critics.

Same. I heard about the game but didn't know it was a System Shock-type FPS by the makers of Dishonored.

I never played the original Prey, but from what I've seen this game is so different that I don't know why they called it a reboot. They could've called it something else and just said it takes place in the Prey universe.

Is Alien: Isolation just a generic horror hide and seek? Going set piece to set piece having to sneak thru contrived situations, or is it an a fully released and explorable space station like System Shock?

The idea of running around a mazelike dilapidated space station while being hunted cat and mouse style sounds amazing but from what I played it was just Outlast in space

Terrible lack of enemy variety and shit enemy design in general

Indies really are the last hope of single-player games.

But it didn't take place in the Prey universe? It's closer to SOMA in space.

>crosshair isnt centered

you really think i'd play a "lol graphics so pretty better than playability" AAA bullshit game like this?

It's fully explorable, and the Alien hunts you throughout the ship. There are pre-set moments when it appears, but it learns from your actions, so you can't rely on the same trick forever

I think people say that because shares a bit of the art deco style

Nah, it makes a lot of sense to compare it to Bioshock, since this is basically System Shock 2.

If I had to describe it, I'd say it's System Shock 2 meets Alien Isolation. Same genre as Bioshock though, and people who like Bioshock should like Prey.

>Another generic and soulless cover shooter
Can people seriously quit pretending they were hyped for Prey 2 already?

youtube.com/watch?v=7TRdx2tbUFI

Everything wasn't okay, bros.

>needs a crosshair to aim
crosshair literally means nothing except but to obstruct your view a little

The soundtrack fucking bangs, one of my favorites in recent memory

hey dumb faggot i don't need a crosshair to aim, i need the point of aim to bein the center of the screen like a video game and not halfway down my nose like i'm in a bizarro reality where games never existed before

>i'm still mad and that's the reason i still haven't played nu-prey
I always find this mentality funny. Prey 2017 would have still been released whether the original Prey 2 ended up being shitcanned or not. They were separate projects until Bethesda decided to just stick the Prey name on Arkane's project late in development for whatever reason.

Didn't like the look or feel of any of the weapons in the game.

>Is Alien: Isolation just a generic horror hide and seek?
Definitely not. It's basically System Shock 2 with Xenomorph hunting you the entire time. One of the better single-player FPS experiences in recent memory.

>getting hyped over a shitty cinematic trailer that would almost definitely not live up to the hype
im so glad i never fell for the prey 2 meme

I just remember one of the devs came on Yea Forums before the game came out and spoiled the whole story because he hated how generic the game was.

Fuck, I dipped out too early it seems. I hate pre-set stealth sequences where you get caught, die, respawn, and repeat. Are there a lot of those like in the very beginning, or does it open up and become more free form and exploratory? Thanks for the responses btw always nice to see real discussion
This is my alarm lel. I have another Prey soundtrack set as my ringtone, they're beautiful little pieces of music

What? Source? Generic is the last way I'd define Prey(2017), but the ending upset me and I can see why it'd upset many. It's kind of grown on me since, but there's no denying the final act after you have a face to face with fatasianjewbro goes to shit. The merc was kind of a cool twist because of course you didn't have human enemies but they could have drawn that out a bit more. Turned it into a cat and mouse game instead of him showing up, then you showing up to fuck him up. Also I get the point of the ending but it undoubtedly could have been executed in more elegant, less jarring, and overall less lazy way

Mick Gordon makes some god-tier music. Too bad that track is the only notable song in the entire game. The rest of the OST is mostly ambience and some bass-y combat tracks.

Mind game is great, my current alarm

youtu.be/i4RanjlL7sg
An actual full length performed song, w different vocalists depending on which Yu you play, also epic

It’s not overlooked, just poorly made. Backtracking and fighting respawns is not fun, even less so in a game with very limited ammo.

Attached: 1488898265435.png (888x4343, 589K)

space bounty hunting aliens is not a topic that gets explored at all, really. i can't understand why. i've been dreaming of a game that fits that description since way back when mass effect 1 came out, so i creamed my jeans a little when that trailer dropped.
>pretending
i was still bright eyed and bushy tailed back then, if i saw the same trailer now, i'd say it was just gonna be more shit

Attached: nigga you don't understand.jpg (250x250, 12K)

On the contrary: it IS fun when you're good at the game

Enemies don't just respawn, they come back badder and in bigger numbers.
Also you really had ammo problems? Fucking what? You can quite literally generate ammo from a plethora of machines around the station. Only way I can conceive of someone running low consistently is if you played the game like DOOM. Even then I pretty much went crazy with the shotgun and never had issues.

I've heard the second song, it was pretty kino when it started playing when you were killing Typhon, then ramped up when more showed up. I wish there was a version of Mind Game without the vocals, the beat sounds good but it's ruined for me with the constant singing.

Mediocre at best.
You must not play many videogames.

I played System Shock 2 after it and I liked it a lot more. Prey 2 was still a good game but it's no masterpiece.

It wasn't that good.
Bioshock was well regarded because it had the whole babbies first ayn rand thing, everything else was kinda mediocre. It inherits only a bare essence of SS atmosphere as the Typhon are too abstract to push on persistent body horror. It doesn't really share anything defining with A:I.
The story is fine up until the hamfisted metacommentary that passes as an ending.
The enemy variety, what they can do, and their effect on, and integration with, the station is extremely lacking giving the implied versatility of the nanomachine alien invaders.
The gameplay loop often revolves around feeding materials into the boring universal recycler rather than having a variety of component crafting avenues. NPCs are strictly stationary cutscene quest givers. Gloo gun is a cute gimmick. Weapons and abilities are basic rock/paper/scissors against resistance/vulnerabilities.
The game completely falls apart at the end when you have the station opened up and you can literally just walk past all the Typhon to the next loading screen.

Still need to do a no-upgrade run and an alien-only run at some point.

Unironically git gud, backtracking is always done with a purpose and you rarely need to do it that much anyway, fighting and avoiding fights is easy if you just stop to think about the things you are about to do.

youtube.com/watch?v=BPkHZfjK5z4
Its not any better than the Prey that was supposed to come out 8 years ago. And that was shitcanned.

You must be atleast 18 to post here. Looks like someone never played System Shock 2. Literally everything in Prey 2017 was stolen from that game. The only thing missing in the latter was a murderous rogue AI.

This is absolutely fucking legendary, holy shit ,he was not lying, he was correct about EVERYTHING, I hope somewhere, some way, this man is vindicated.

Thanks for pulling through user. The devs resentment is exactly what I felt when I got to the ending. Fuck now I'm mad again.

>mfw reading about Typhon and what they do to you
Not only do they recycle your bio-matter into new forms of Typhon but they also Third Impact your mind and turn it into a physical material the Typhon can access, meaning every thought you ever had is now a Typhon thought.

Like I thought the Sphere from Prey 2006 was freaky with it being a living space station but the Typhon are fucking even more bonkers.

Attached: Bugs.jpg (500x552, 83K)

The coral is physical manifestation of their consciousness. That is to say all of the Typhon victim's consciousness.

Mr marketer, why isn't Mooncrash standalone?

>Mr. Marketer
>For a 2 year old game
I was just posting my feelings about reading the typhon faggot. I will always state in Prey threads that the typhon being black blobs really hurts the fear factor that they were trying to achieve with them.

Attached: ishygddt.jpg (600x600, 35K)

Sorry, I get confused because prey OPs are still using the same template to start threads.

I was not even sure where this cap was going at first, but boi you can feel the salt overflowing this dude's veins because his favourite dog was not chosen for the race.

>because his favourite dog was not chosen for the race
Can't race if the track owner unzips your dog from throat to stomach with a straight razor.

I don't think they were supposed to be fear inducing for the whole game anyway, not even games like silent hill manage to do that, later on you get used to them the same way you get used to halo enemies.

blame murderous bethesda, at some point it's better to differenciate the author from it's work as much as you might hate or love one or the other.

The Bounty hunter game was way better

Theres that "y-you're just hurting the devs" line again.
Devs already got paid, retard.

Reading comprension you absolute brainlet, at what point am I trying to defend them? If any I implied the complete opposite.

>more bonkers
'ello there reddit how you doin'
If you're really into mind-blowing twists then you should look up the plot of the actual Prey 2.
Now that was some great fucking plot twists right there. And it'll never be made.

FUCK BETHESDA FUCK NIGGERS WHO BUY AND MOD THEIR GAMES AND FUCK YOU

youtube.com/watch?v=vE8XJEeOpyA

Except I wasn't talking about the twist of the game which is actual dogshit, but the description of the Typhon and what they do to living creatures. Like, what the sphere did was fucked up and they presented the fucked up situation better, but conceptually the Typhon are the scarier threat. Thinking about it further, they are basically the Tyranids from 40k, going across the galaxy absorbing bio-matter to evolve their species further with a method to spread their thoughts across large distances, except the Typhon (Or at least the mimics) have the ability to slip in and out of real space on a whim

Attached: Cheeki Breeki.jpg (637x358, 39K)

Probably because it's absolute dogshit.

>most generic-looking, boring sci-fi environments; no atmosphere at all
>alien design is terrible
>typhon powers are shit
>you have crafting but it's a complete waste, the game doesn't have a steady sense of progression like Dead Space or Bioshock
>story is garbage
>NPCs are garbage
>even the main character is garbage with no opinions of his own because of muh epic tweest

The game has literally nothing going for it.

Prey 2018 wins by mere merit of actually existing.

But that's nothing original.
Even the "glowing shit byproduct harvested for macguffin" has been done before, and better.
And going by 40k standards, typhons are literally an enslaver plague.

>shit this
>shit that
Spoken like a true brainlet.
>brings up Bioshock and Dead Space as positives
Oh my fucking god.

grimdark dude bro games especially single player ones are out of date

How does Arx Fatalis hold up? The magic system looks interesting and I've played every other Arkane game and most Looking Glass games.

>due to bad single player games generally dying
ftfy

It's not fun

Garbage marketing by Bethesda, people with bad tastes and or that were mad it wasn't the real Prey 2 and boycotted it.

It's objectively one of the best games of this gen and it's already a cult classic that'll be recommended alongside the big names like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 but like almost all Immersive Sim it's a flop at release because it's not accessible enough and seem boring to people that don't understand it.

I wanna be interested in the game but the lame black goop enemies just leave me not wanting to play it

what an autist with shit taste. Prey is fucking amazing

There's only two things I don't like about this game and that's the loading times and how boring the enemy design is. Otherwise, it's one of the better games I've played in a long while.

What a strange complaint.

nu-prey is dogshit with fag/dyke propaganda in it and arkane studios/dishonored are shit

I played this game right after Bioshock Infinite, and it blows BSI out of the water.

This is the most honest and compelling answer to this thread but contrarians will disagree with you anyway

they did that to facilitate picking up objects from the ground and improve readability on screens, which is a majority of the game

take your meds

they were hiding it but definitely terrified of the modern sjw climate

There is so much posting about Prey presently. Nice work fellow Bethesda employer!
i genuinely hope this is true shills whom trying to hype thing up before E3 announcement of Prey 2

>implying anyone who likes Prey is also a fan of Bethesda running it into the ground
Arkane is literally held captive at this point, they're being forced to work on wolfenshtein

It's sad that shit game Prototype was literally shilled here by whoever the fuck published it 10 years ago. Literally you cannot post anything nice about a game without someone going ***SHILL SHILL SHILL***

I pirated the shit 2 nights ago and I've been playing it this whole weekend. I really liked it and I was thinking "why didn't this shit get way more press when it came out" and so I made this thread

but yeah Arkane Prey 2 would be sick, though it'd have to be some totally new thing basically

>grimdark dude bro
>Prey 2017
wut

My dad is Nintendo, trust me.
Nigger, Human head, the developers of canceled "mirrors edge with bounty hounting", also made the game called Brink, and some other gems. So when Bethesda said that it didnt meet their expectations, im probably believing them, and not some dude trust me guy who said that it was some already finished 10/10 masterpiece.

It feels like bioshock, thats why people compare them

Arkane are up there with the best devs around right now, and Bethesda has them retreading IPs, which Arkane just end up turning them into something totally new and unrelated to the source.

>"We're going to shake things up, Morgan. Like old times."
Why do i feel so sad?

Prey 2 was probably going to be dogshit. The whole premise was corny and ridiculous, and all we got was a CGI trailer for people to get hyped about.

Prey 2 apologists are always just caught up in their own imaginations of what could've been.

I loved it and Moonfall was also superb. Cannot say the same for Typhon Hunter, though.

Not sure what you're saying user. The dates check out and you can check the archive. At the very least the dude played the whole game a month early.

>the same vein of FPS/RPG as Bioshock, System Shock 2, Alien: Isolation
The only one of those that is an RPG is System Shock 2. Bioshock is a corridor FPS. I haven't played Isolation, but it looks like a survival horror game.

Attached: 1848215772.png (110x128, 24K)

>you have crafting but it's a complete waste, the game doesn't have a steady sense of progression like Dead Space or Bioshock

>using dead space and bioshock as an example of good progression systems

What progression? Dead Space is a RE4 clone, and the only progression is the exact same weapon upgrades RE4 had.

Bioshock actively dumbed down System Shock 2's RPG systems. A true RPG forces you to make lasting choices on how to upgrade your character. In Bioshock not only do you get enough ADAM to buy virtually everything, but you never make any permanent choices, since the tonics and plasmids can be slotted in and out.

Another sign of a true RPG is that your character build determines what your character do. In Bioshock this is not the case (e.g. any character can hack, you don't have to specialize in a hacking skill to be able to do it).

Attached: 1551017810907.png (558x614, 29K)

Because Arkane turned to SJW after DH2 and it fucking shows.

>everyone is a POC
>everyone is ugly
>everyone is gay

It didn't help much that they employed some gender studies freaks who attacked people left and right on twitter. It's a good thing DH2 and Prey flopped hard so that Arkane is now fucked forever.

I liked Prey and even beat the game three times but I was annoyed how obnoxiously it dropped lesbians in the main storyline with no way to skip them.

>Definitely not. It's basically System Shock 2 with Xenomorph hunting you the entire time. One of the better single-player FPS experiences in recent memory.
I'm a fan of SS2 and I dropped Alien Isolation after an hour of walking around and hiding in closets. You're relling me there is skill system, weapon upgrade and degradation etc?

Because its got shit reviews thanks to ign who gave it a 6/10 because of a game breaking bug.

I really liked the opening and seeing everything reveal itself and then once you get to the main game it’s like a fun old game where you just go places and do stuff without many cutscenes to break up the isolated feeling they wanted. Awesome. I think it’s just the combination of Bethesda and an awful trailer/marketing.

I did stop playing at some point. I didn’t like the enemy design but messing around with abilities is pretty sick and I like the level design. Lots of exploration.

Prey 2017 is the ultimate pleb filter. It blows my mind that people say shit like Prey 2 was better when all we ever saw was some prerendered trailer for it. All you're doing by clinging on to it is missing out on a great game that actually came out.

That game was my GOTY, fucking shame gamers and also game "journos" are fucking casuals that deserve the shit they've been eating for years

>OP still shills for this SJW dumpsterfire daily
