It never hit the highs of HW. The Trial encounters were a step up mechanically, but they never hit the atmospheric peaks that Thordan and Nidhogg hit.

Rushed story, lackluster content and Eureka. Where it not for the Ultimate fights it would be 4/10. Stormblood did nothing to build upon Heavensward instead opting to rely on more of the same. Is it better than ARR? Objectively yes since it follows the lessons HW learned from ARR but given HW came before it I will judge it against such and not Vanilla 2.0. Outside of Heavensward's 4.1 drought it does everything the same if not worse solely due to the merit of longevity being shorter with no glamstick to prop it up. They continued with their failed Diadem idea and solely made it worse while pairing with one of the most boring/horrid progression this game has to offer. The overall pacing was disjointed and it really makes me wonder how it would have been if they just focused on the Ala Mhigan territory like it was supposed to.

If you can afford it, buy some Rakasha gear on the market board. Always prioritize your weapon.
If not, do daily/weekly hunts to buy some Lost Allagan gear from the Centurio people in Rhalgr's Reach until you can start doing some of the level 70 dungeons. Then start collecting tomestones.

Honestly, it's a total mystery what the eureka population will be like once ShB drops. If you no life it, it'll still take at least 100 hours to do your weapon.

I'm sure in ShB there will be more nerfs to each zone to make them more feasible at low populations.

You can still probably do it, but it's a huge time committment. And make sure you've actually looked at the final product of the weapon you want, as they range wildly in quality compared to HW.

I still try to run it on occasion to try to get the solo title. Highest I've gone is 73. Every fight is a fucking boss fight solo at that point, and I suck at kiting the normal mobs. Bosses are ironically the easy party.

Stormblood had very few memorable parts, only some boss fights and zenos were awesome. Only 2 jobs this time around and they shit up the everloving fuck out of queue times. Not as balanced as HW. Story was all about liberals freeing the mhigger savages and that was pretty gay. 6/10.

Made me quit for good. It's turning more and more into a sanitised, kindergarten RP sim, "social" platform. The job homogenisation and fucking gauge bars ruined my favourite jobs for me and the predictable, boring nature of updates makes the game feel like an office job where you just grind for tomes and tokens.

There really needs to be a way to lock controller players out of PFs and a way to queue DF that avoids controller players. Hopefully the shad expansion will address this.

Really it's time we just face facts: they are using an objectively worse, obsolete control scheme in an MMO. Don't even try to defend them here, that's completely asinine. The way crossbars work you have to click 4 different buttons to reach a skill that doesn't happen to be one of the few available on the bar you are using. Even worse if its on the pet bar. And you still have to switch back when necessary, more button presses. They end up spending three to four times as much presses to do what a M+KB is doing. And then the targetting! Fuck, a controller player has to scroll through EVERY. SINGLE. TARGET. To get what they want. With a mouse you just click, and done. Like .5 secs if you have fat hands. Plus mouseover macros, another amazing tool out of the reach of controllerfags.

Cheap HQ rakshasa gear. Hand them in for tokens. Use these tokens alongside doman reiyaku (bought with mendacity) to get 390 gear. A good way to go about it is buying rakshasa for all the slots you have and gradually replacing it with 390 this way or through Orbonne once you've unlocked it.

Overall I give SB a 6 out of 10 for meh it's mediocre. Its best aspects are the raids and the last three trials. Worst is and forever will be Eureka. In comparison HW gets at best a 5, its best part is basically 3.0 story but everything else is practically shit and were a constant chain of poorly thought out ideas executed horribly that they had to end up backpedaling on.

If you are playing this game for the story, know that nothing pretty much tops Binding Coil and 3.0. For anything else SB is pretty much taking HW after all its backpedaling and playing it 100% safe, and for whatever reason trying to push DIadem in a new coat of paint even tho it was widely disliked and so is Eureka.

Worse than HW in almost every way. Hopefully Shadowbringers has better content, but I have my doubts. The zones look way more interesting at the very least. I'd say the story couldn't be worse than SB, but seeing a loli Minfilia basically puts a nail in the preme's coffin.

There's plenty of visual and mechanical variety in Alexander's fights. Having a lot of robots means nothing.

Wait til the cast bar is just about to finish. If you just repeatedly warp as soon as that bit starts, there's a good chance you'll be staggered at the wrong moment and unable to warp as the game screenshots where you are when the cast finishes.

Soken made them work for ffxiv, it's fine.

Cruise chaser, alexander, and O9 look different visually. The rest are extremely similar.

They have a consistent design philosophy but you're fucking high if you think Brute Justice, trashman, Faust, Manipulator, or the sentai bots look similar at all.

I'm not gonna say that the alexander fights weren't visually distinctive. I am gonna say I thought a lot of them were dull. The only ones that really grabbed me were brute justice, cruise chaser, and alex prime. The rest were anywhere from just okay to really dull. I felt that even if the lore around the Omegascape fights weren't as interesting, the fights themselves at least were.

I mentioned trashman in my post but yes I think the others are extremely similar. Brute justice gets a pass for being a fantastic fight in all aspects but he still looks similar to the others.

Leveling: 6/10, only saved from mediocrity by a couple scenarios like Azim Steppe, Doma Castle and the lead up to the assault on Ala Mhigo

Endgame: 7/10. Better than the leveling slog. Being a longtime FF fan I appreciated all the fanwank in the raids, though it would have been nice to get some XIV-exclusive content or integrate it better into the world.

Post-story quests: 5/10. Burn and Gimlyt were cool dungeons but the story was dull as hell with some stupid decision making, like Lyse inviting tempered beastmen into the city.

Lyse ruined the expansion for me, storywise. One bad character ruins the bunch.

At least blm got even better.

3.0 post launch to 3.2 launch was easily the weakest time for the game. The fact Stormblood didn't have anything like that makes it succeed in my eyes.
I love both expansions to death and I don't think SB deserves nearly the hate it gets. It really is just "i love heavensward" when stormblood was just as good as it.

Integrating it into the world would have been something like,

Dunno, I don't even think Lyse is nearly as bad as everyone screeches about, so letting her ruin the entire expansion for you is something else.

She was that shitty. Everything about her rise to power in ala mhigo pisses me off.

I liked the raids and EX fights. Fight design was on point, Soken's music was amazing as always, and the introduction of new mechanics like Byakko's ball dodging and Suzaku's "simon says" board never disappoints.

My two biggest complaints about the expansion are the story and the some class changes. Storywise, this really felt like XIV's Cataclysm or Warlords moment, where the story was uninteresting and really only served as a gap-filler between an interesting expansion (Heavensward) and a hopefully-interesting one in Shadowbringers. Class changes also sucked. MCH has been garbage for the entire expansion, and DRK got completely gutted from HW. I'm hoping that Shadowbringers fixes them, in an actually good way. DRG became incredibly braindead simple, it's impossible to drop BotD outside of long fight transitions. WHM continues to bring nothing to the table, and Lilies as a system really needs a good looking over. Riddle of Fire feels very out of place on MNK, whose job design for the past two expansions was having the speediest GCD so long as you could keep up GL stacks. RDM wasn't changed, as it was introduced in the expansion, but it really needs more complexity. That's all I really got.

The issue is it's pretty much a repeat of Heavensward but with a badly paced story thanks to splitting the focus between Doma and Ala Mhigo. People remember HW fondly cause while 3.1 had a drought the expansion as a whole did improve noticeably upon ARR. Stormblood was just more of the same on top of nearly having all the same flaws if not introducing new ones along with it. Competitively it didn't change much in any positive manner for most players so it was and will be met with more scrutiny, didn't help they blew their load on such subpar content aka Eureka. The only thing that actually looked like growth were the Ultimate fights, content that seems to be nearly universally agreed upon as good content especially considering how little it takes up on resources given they're retelling of past raids and fights. Stormblood will always be Heavensward's lesser even if it's nearly the exact same

Basically, you only ever fight Omega in the Stormblood raid series. No other enemy actually exists or has any sort of history, it's all Omega using different forms to test you as you go, just tools it makes and uses. I really didn't like that.

Yeah, Sigmascape is based off of some other world Omega passed through that was already dead and gone. Could be one of the other shards of Hydaelyn, but I doubt we'll ever know. Personally I headcanon that it was the shard rejoined during the Calamity of Water, because that was caused by the War of the Magi.

The EX fights left a little more to be desired since Shinryu and Tsukuyomi were the only good ones, all the others were too easy but more or less enjoyable, the only actually bad one was Lakshmi.

Mixed feelings on this one, a lot of the Omega ones were kind of weak in this regard. The 4 Lords fights are visually impressive, and all the other bosses look equally good and have especially spectacular battles.

Agreed but no reason we couldn't have both. As it stands the Ala Mhigan and Doman liberation should have happened around 4.3 to 4.4 with the first half of SB being dedicated to freeing Doma. Tsukiyumi's arc wouldn't have conflicted at all and the Garlean retaliation would have still made sense near 4.5. it would have given not reason and time to grow Zenos as a character rather than relying on Ascians for the umpteenth time.

Ivalice as a setting bores me to tears. I dropped Tactics. Dropped Vagrant Story after a few hours. Didn't even bother playing XII (it's the only mainline FF I haven't touched.) Even in XIV, I played the first 24-man a few times, but I only played the Lighthouse twice and haven't even bothered with the last raid. Seeing the Ivalice race get introduced in 5.0 fills me with worry because I just can't enjoy that world at all.

They're BiS for Eureka but you can get Elemental gear and do almost as well. Vermy cloak and Osode only have the materia slots over Elemental gear.

Glamour, Osode is great for SAM glamours

They give you give you the equivalent of like 2 magecite to your elemental defense. Plus, by being ilvl300, the 5 materia you slot in them won't be lost by the ilvl sync that higher level gear would.

They are nice but not mandatory outside of like baldesion arsenal

You basically get carried in BA since your DPS will be on the lower end

Mch actually has pretty good DPS when played optimally.

The job balance alone is what makes Stormblood better than HW.
Remember how you weren’t allowed to use Paladins and Monks in HW? I don’t mean the “Well SAM are bad because they don’t give any raid buffs” memes, I mean if you bring them you are actively damaging your group. Paladins didn’t have enough cooldown for A12S and ran out of TP instantly. Monks had no aggro dump or aggro reduction ability so that combined with their high personal DPS forced tanks to use aggro combos. Monks had the lowest raid DPS by like a full 10-15% below the next lowest because of how much they hurt tanks.

Crystal Tower in its entirety was a retelling of FF3, the Ultima Weapon, majority of the game's primals, Bismarck is supposed to be like Sin from FFX, Alexander had Living Liquid and Cruise Chaser and the Alexander-seeking goblins were a reference to XI's Moblins. More devs need to see the value of catchy upbeat music in slow/repetetive games like mmos. Makes it a easier to bear the grind than generic serious orchestral songs.

I give Stormblood a solid 6/10. Ultimate fights were a good sign of Raid design growth but outside of that most if not all of the game is stagnant when you consider HW. It's HW:Red Version with a shittier story like mentions. They obviously fisted in Doma as best they could and Ala Mhigo suffered cause of it. Though they never did a good job of making us care for them even if they were an important region since 1.0 Raid design was solid but not really an improvement with the "Digiconstructs of other FF game enemies" being split among the community. Everything else was more of the same and predictable to a fault leaving little to no visible growth when compared to HW following ARR. Honestly at this point I do see ShadowBringers being a true iteration of WoD especially given the similarity in story theme if they keep relying on the HW formula on top of what seems to be a diminishing and/or unexperienced Dev Team given how they've struggled to even given Viera and Hrothgar proper headgear.

I think HW EX trials were overall better, but the worst SB trials were better than the worst HW trials. Four Lords trials were generally solid, if lacking in anything super impressive. At least the Four Lords story had an ending, unlike the Warring Triad story.
I don't think SB MSQ ever quite reached the peaks of HW, but it definitely kept my interest every patch. Only real complaint is how poor 4.5 part 2 was, but that probably would've been a fair bit better if we hadn't seen the ShB trailer that basically told us exactly what was going to happen already.
I think Eureka was fine, it consistently improved in each iteration and I'm willing to see what they do with that type of content in 5.X. Arsenal was fun, as horribly designed as entry was.
Overall I'd give it the same 8/10 as HW. The peaks weren't as high, but the valleys weren't as low.

the primals were fantastic imo, especially Tsukuyomi and Suzaku
Omega was good, the fanservice notably was excellent
I'm one of the few people who likes Eureka, it gives me that oldschool MMO vibe, partying and camping mobs and forming real hard raids for "world" content that's missing from other modern MMOs. It's good to see dozens of people get murdered by giant one-shot AOEs and mechanics, it makes surviving them feel all the more grizzling
the zones were hit and miss, I liked Kugane and the Steppe but didn't care for the rest
the story was great for the most part, I really love Zenos as a character, I loved Tsuyu and Gosetsu, I liked retaking Ala Mhigo and the effort they put into making the war feel like an actual campaign with cool climaxes (as opposed to say BFA's war campaign that feels completely phoned in)
some dungeons were forgettable and became tedious after a point, especially Castrum Abania, St Mocianne hard and sirensong sea
But the rest were mostly pretty cool

Overall it was a very good time, definitely underrated

I love all of the elemental armor, and the relics look great for SAM and RDM and DRG the three classes I love the most. They really made Eureka go from being amazing to being the best part of the expansion hands down. I have sky high expectations for Eureka 3.0 in ShB.

Low skill floor and incredibly high skill ceiling if you have a comp that enables snapshoting.
Probably one of the most well designed classes as well. Rotation is fun and intuitive and you have amazing movement.

However, even if it's lows aren't as low as Heavensward having a huge content draught immediately after release punctuated by arguably the worst raid tier in the games history, it also doesn't have the highs that Heavenswards story presented. Even if I look back more fondly on Heavensward, I can't help but think of Stormblood as the better package altogether.

I'd give it probably and 8-9/10, Heavensward an 8, and ARR a 7.5.

Well it's going to last until level 80 without needing to gear up in dungeons if you go out of your way for it.

Stormblood was as filler as they come and was probably a case of not having enough to stretch out Ala Mhigo as a full story hence the reason for Doma's inclusion. It will always be the weakest link of XIV unless ShB is somehow XIV's WoD. We will never have a CGI fight between Omega and Shinryu

Pugging it's fine for 24-man raids and the basic 8-man raids. Pugging gets a lot stickier with Savage raids, the advanced 8-man tier, but luck-of-the-draw it's still possible. You'll likely want a guild for that.

Pretty much, 24-player raids are so far themed around Final Fantasy 3, Final Fantasy 9 and the Black Mage nation of Mhach in-game, and Ivalice/Final Fantasy Tactics respectively. They're mainly a short walking distance between enemy waves and/or large bosses, with mechanics accompanying three 8-man parties.
