Some characters look better than others, but I still love the cartoony environments and facial animations in Psychonauts.

Actually, you might not have been born yet or something so what I am about to say might surprise you. Fact is, Oblivion had huge amounts of praise for the graphics. The whole meme about leaving the sewer the first time is derivative of the fact so many people talked about how good the game looked on a pc with a athlon 64x2 and a x1900 or similar (with bloom/hdr at 1024x768).

The faces were always atrocious.

To this day I don't know why. Even back that I thought the game looked like dogshit compared to other titles. Everything is overly shiny and poorly lit, it got a significant downgrade compared to earlier showcases, and all of the character design and animations were complete ass for what was supposed to be a "next gen" title.

Forgot the name but it was an Alice in Wonderland game, except a turn based RPG.

SH3 has somehow withstood the test of time, despite going for realism.

I thought Brutal Legend's character design was a lot of fun. Standards for photo-realism are constantly updating but cartoonier styles hold strong.

It's amazing that they managed to fuck up the HD version. Just increase the render resolution and remake the HUD elements so they can scale up, that's all they should have done.

Basically any game in the vertex-lighting era of graphics rendering, that have decent texture resolution. No shitty blurry lightmaps, no pixelated realtime shadow, no bloom. Just pure.

The wonky perspective choice aside, I always thought Divine Divinity looks extremely good. The animations are smooth and everything has high levels of detail.

For as much criticism I give to the KH series. It still holds up for a ps2 game. Especially the particle effects.

You're not wrong, but you have to keep in mind that Oblivion came out around the same time as Bioshock, Half Life 2, and Crysis. Even disregarding them, a lot of last-gen titles like FF12, SH3/4, RE4, and Shadow of the Colossus all had far better visual fidelity, despite being on a system with a small fraction of the power.

I hate to over-hype expectations after a decade of waiting, but I can't help but be hopeful for it. Everything I've seen of it so far looks good.

LA Noire made a big deal of using extensive mocap for all its characters.

Low poly playstation games should have been the cutoff in terms of graphics. Make devs focus on story and gameplay instead of worrying if their game is "cinematic" and cutting-edge enough.

Always felt that mgs4 was years ahead of the curve, the animation and art direction is timeless in spite of the fact that it is realism based (which is in most cases not timeless at all).
