Super Metroidvania IV
classic: Symphony of the Night
contemporary: Hollow Knight
La Mulana remake
ori
Environmental Station Alpha.
This. La Mulana and its sequel are leagues ahead of any other metroidvania I've played. Also it's not quite in the same genre, but if you enjoy this style of game look at Rain World
That's a great one. SOTN is all-time best, followed by Super Metroid.
Some of the other GBA Castlevania games are good too but they pale in comparison to the others.
Currently waiting for Bloodstained.
I mostly agree with this one. I need to stop being lazy and make my own. Main difference is I'd swap La-Mulana with Hollow Knight.
The original I wanna be the guy.
TVTropes has probably the most complete list of Metroidvanias, but a lot of them I don't think actually are. Take a game like VVVVVV, which has a large, interconnected map, but no power-ups or movement upgrades.
Rabi-Ribi.
That is, until it gets dethroned by its even better sequel, The Love Bunny.
I am happy it exists because without it I don't think its fangames would have even spawned but after getting used to them the original's physics are so bad it hurts to play.
SOTN hands down, but for classics I can't choose. I like 1,3,4,Rondo,Bloodlines,and x68000 a lot. Rebirth too, even. None of the metroidvanias after SOTN captured the movement that game had, Alucard just has so many options at once that he's fun to control and it really makes the exploration more fun.
Exile
>TVTropes
I went back to it this year and double jump detection seems particularly buggy, but still solid.
What are your top fangames?
Last I played was I dun wanna be anything 2 which is an actual metroidvania with powerups, pretty nice game overall.
Aria of Sorrow is the absolute peak of the genre
dun wanna be anything 2 is solid I really need to finish it at some point
I'm more of a fan of straight up needle games, my favourites are still Cultured 2, Shiver or the Dandy series.
Symphony of the Night
Order of Ecclesia
Portrait of Ruins
Classic: Tie between Super Metroid and Aria of Sorrow
Modern: Hollow Knight by a large margin, excited for Silksong
Aria of Sorrow and AM2R
Portrait of Ruin.
Based and soulpilled
>mega man zx not listed
shitty tourist list
ZX is trash and would've been better with a stage select screen instead of the stupid overworld.
Is that an actual Metroidvania though? A big, interconnected map with powerups that let you backtrack and find new areas?
La mulana remake
yaok
yes
What a retarded name...
Mostly agree but I really don't think Dawn of Sorrow is on par with Aria of Sorrow
Aria, Hollow Knight, and Momodora 4
I agree with that too, actually.
DoS introduced soul grinding/farming with its stupid crafting system and requiring multiple copies of a soul to make soul abilities worth using.
Luna nights.
You people sure you're not overrating Hollow knight by a bit? Do you really think it did enough things original or well to warrant being at the very top or near it?
Also, Axiom Verge is better than people give it credit for
T. retards who don't understand what Metroidvania means
is ori really generally considered just kinda middle of the road? i'm pretty new to the genre but absolutely loved it.
Retard.
Great post.
No it's great, that list was just made by a hipster.
I think this list is questionable, but noone made another one that actually stuck.
Ori is immensely better than Shadow Complex, for example. Shadow Complex should be probably put even below meh tier in this list.
Almost all of those replies are actual metroidvanias idiot
>HK
>God tier
Great or Good tier.
I'm sick of going Into a thread and seeing these ABOSLUTE FUCKING DOWN SYNDROME anons commenting on shit they have ABSOLUTELY no idea of. Get fucked by a pig and die.
>My favorite Metroidvania is Hollow Knight!
Now now my cute little dumbass. Which part of "Hollow Knight" do you get "Castlevania" from? Let me educate you, "Metroidvania" is used specifically for games of the "Castlevania" franchise that are not "Classicvanias"
Sorry you were born after the term came out so you could misuse it. Let me guess you are also a big "Rogue-like" fan also right?
Binding of Isaac is a roguelike no matter how much it makes you autists seethe.
It's a genre you fucking autist
no it isn't you complete moron. Answer this question, is Metroid a Metroidvania?
Symphony is still the best and casts the shadow
No game will do so much right and so much soul ever again.
Yes
The term was created to describe the genre of "games like Metroid and [SotN-style] Castlevania" you fucking idiot, not to describe Metroid and Castlevania because they're already called Metroid and Castlevania
Nobody can be this stupid
Wheres terraria?
>terraria
Progression/story: Environmental Station Alpha
Everything else: Portrait of ruin
as expected of a retard. Platformers which you need to gain your moves by exploration are Adventure-Platformers. SotN is not a new game and has already had an existing genre, slapping an Experience Bar on it changes nothing.
Cry all you want, metroidvania is a genre label that exists and people use and you'll never be able to stop it
That dude was just baiting. There's so much dispute over what a Metroidvania is even whether the genre should be called Metroidvania. It's easy to provoke argumentation over it.
I take a liberal view I guess because I consider classic Zelda's top-down view Metroidvanias since they have all the same sense of progression.
that's an unique list, i'll give you that
>marrow
now this is epic
La Mulana is not good
correct. la mulana is not good, it's fantastic
This.
Add Night of Revenge
that's fine I have enough image macros to make fun of short-bus riders for the next decade and I will. Every chance I get I will remind you how braindead you are
>Platformers which you need to gain your moves by exploration are Adventure-Platformers
That is wrong.
Metroidvanias are just platformers for actual down syndrome mutants
>No focused level design
>Everything is piss easy
>Thrill comes from watching numbers go up like a boring JRPG and/or getting contextual upgrades that let you break walls you saw 3 hours ago
A Metroidvania is fun every once in a while but if you've played a couple of the big ones you've seen everything they have to offer
You are actually autistic.
Words (especially those that people invent to categorize something) end up having a broad meaning. Like "faschist" actually means one of a group of Italian politicians from 90 years ago, but everyone uses it to describe modern politics.
What is this I don't even
Someone kept pushing the "La Mulana is the best game ever" in Hollow Knight threads a long time ago to shit things up but the funniest part was he kept shilling Marrow by putting it on the list with the others.
>No focused level design
Some are not generated and have a good level design.
>Everything is piss easy
Those usually start harder and become more easy with each step.
>Thrill
No thrill.
Super Metroid and SotN are still the best ones, it's kind of worrying.
Retard
SotN isn't even the best in its franchise, let alone the genre.
You could say that about anything if you're a brute. Opera all sounds the same to a neanderthal. Also, Metroidvanias are not all easy. Hollow Knight, for example.
Your problem is that you don't have any friends and you're lonely so you pick fights on the internet for attention. Why don't you try learning how to suck your own dick instead of just being a faggot on Yea Forums?
Based
>Your problem is that you don't have any friends and you're lonely so you pick fights on the internet for attention
Projecting immediately invalidates your argument, Metroidvania brainlet
Not OP but Metroid is a Metroidlike, not a Metroidvania since it doesn't have stats like an RPG.
Well, La-Mulana and its remake ARE the best metroidvanias out there. Hollow knight is great too but nowhere near as memorable.
CotM. The rest were good but felt too easy
It's probably not the best one, but I freaking love Portrait of Ruin.
>sorrow games that high
It's not, though.
Please do not be stupid on these premises.
Whatever helps you sleep at night
Super Castlevania IV
Playing as axe knight was so much fun
>Super Metroid
I still laugh everytime someone say that game is anything more than okay at best.
So fucking overrated and nostalgia bias.
My older cousing let me played all the way back in the SNES era, before I even knew it was going to become such a massive meme, and the game was still just barely enjoyable.
I will give you the fact that if you like scifi stuff then it was one of the best games for that feel but aside from that theres nothing amazing about that game. I will even go as far to say that the GBA games were a thousand times better and I would understand if they got the same treatment, but Super Metroid was and still is pretty fucking mediocre.
tldr
