The whole point of it is to keep up artificial hype for six months to a year for things that are already in the game. Rather than coming out with actual DLC, Nintendo just holds back finished content that should be in the game at launch to dribble it out over the course of several months "for free" to make it seem like a good idea. You're being drip fed things you should be getting on launch day so Nintendo can be lazy. Though to be fair, they only do this with B/C-tier franchises like Mario Tennis and Kirby.
