Normally I'd agree with you, but Valkyria Chronicles 4 was a "back to basics" approach, so it feels more like a direct sequel to the first game than 2 or 3 in terms of gameplay progression. You can play 2 and 3 later.

Ordering the tranny to kill himself because I liked Rosetta but ended up replacing them with Minerva for the CP, and a suicide mission alongside a Darcsen to decide the fate of the world felt like the perfect ending.

A lot purists hated 4 for whatever reason, but as someone that played VC1 when it was new and no one knew about it, 4 is my favorite in the series. Loved every minute of it and it was my goty last year. Hope you enjoy it.
