The Namek Saga was the only time Dragon Ball approached good writing, 3+ groups making alliances, betrayals, etc. all searching after 7 objects that individually are useless, but give ultimate power to anyone who gets them all first. It's a damned shame it just ends with Goku fighting the big bad. I think it would have been way better if Freeza tried detonating the planet earlier, and the ending arc was about Freeza hunting down the heroes and vice versa as they try to escape the planet before it explodes and kills them all.
