Steam version has the advantage of having a mod for it that substitutes the backgrounds for better, AI-made ones that have some really good detail, to go along with the higher quality of the 3D models. It changes the battle interface too in ways that are iOS-like, but honestly I didn't find it as big a bother as I expected to as I replayed through it. I would recommend that version over the original PS1 one

This is why I barely used summons or magic if necessary in FF games. This is one of the few JRPG series where Attacks > Magic a majority of the time.

Basically. Not versed well enough in 2 to know if it has anything from there, though, and some things are less direct, like Nael kind of being a Sephiroth clone

You can kind of chart a connection between most, if not all of them. If you follow the lines, I think that only IV, XV, and MAYBE the XIII games fall outside of that shared universe, everything else is connected directly or indirectly even if the games themselves are as standalone as they can be.
And fun fact, that connection also extends outside of Final Fantasy, up to the Tactics Ogre games as well, plus Vagrant Story. Hell, I think one user at some point got cheeky and talked about how the connection could extend all the way to Tekken, Ridge Racer and Ace Combat, but I could be mistaken.

It may be basic, but I've always loved the designs of the Black Magicians in just about every FF.

The automation mages in 9 were some peak design for sure. And those fucking feels when you get to the village for the first time and they describe how eventually mages will just "stop moving", and they give them a burial despite not even knowing what it means.

I kind of figured, because to me, it looks like the Tower of Kefka was broken into pieces and shattered across the worlds. In 7, Jenova looks very similar to the topmost section of the tower, with Sephiroth bearing a resemblance to a male "Goddess" design that seems to be recurring across some of the villains. Even Eden seems to have the appearance too. I would say it's just a coincidence and Nomura/Amano repeat their designs, but it would make an interesting connection I would say, considering that world had it's magic removed.

Well, there's a lot of "recursive" design between the games. The kind of connection you're hinting to though, is multiple games taking place within the same "universe", which is something that doesn't really happen, although X-2 has an easter egg in it about a character called Shinra that talks about going to space and colonizing other planets.
The center design of the tower, for example, resembles Neo Exdeath's design in V, the game that came immediately prior to it.

The continuity that is shared between the games is more in the sense of how every world is surrounded by this ethereal Void that acts as reality's janitor, and the way it interacts with the Crystals that each world has, and how when these crystals are tampered with, it makes itself manifest in a physical form to bring everything back to zero.

You have to take it with a grain of salt. Like every other older franchise; they kind of made it up as they went along and started referencing back to it later on for nostalgia points. There was no major plan for a connected FF Universe.
