I think there is absolutely still the opportunity to be a successful streamer, but I think it will be very, very, very hard.
Speedrunners get people watching their streams, but only if they're very good (which will take ages), and even then, they're hardly setting the world on fire with their view counts.
If you're just going to be a variety streamer then, yeah, it's probably going to be quite hard. Unless you're catering to some niche interest. Or unless you just have some unique angle.
Honestly you're probably better off making YouTube videos about a particular subject. YouTube's videos cover every topic under the sun, obviously. Whereas video game streaming is usually just about video games. There are lots of YouTube channels about all sorts of subjects that earn the creators money.
