No, the devs actually seem competent and somewhat intelligent. The game's main strength is modding, even the script creator is ez pz. But they're releasing a complete adventure mode with the game, to draw people in at first and to showcase its capabilities, while the modders start their work.

Minecraft fell off because it was mismanaged. The modding community kept it alive for much longer than it would've lived otherwise. If Hytale devs can deliver then the only major thing I could see it failing on is the amount of content on release. It'll inevitably get compared to Minecraft and its mods so it needs to have quite a hefty amount of content straight outta the gate or people will get bored quick.

There's a monster picking up a huge chunk of dirt and throwing it at a player in the trailer, so even if the devs are fucking stupid and don't give the player the ability to dig, it'll only be a matter of two days tops before some guy mods it in.

I imagine it still gets played and the modding community isn't entirely dead but it's presence online has definitely gotten way smaller. And it got mismanaged way before MS bought it.

The last time I got hyped for a game was Guild Wars 2, and that definitely didn't live up to my expectations. If this game can be Minecraft except with good combat, it would be a day one purchase. The mod support would just be gravy on top of that.

But, I just can't be wholly optimistic. I have a sinking feeling in my gut that this is going to be choked out by mod monetization or mismanagement. It'll be hard for an organic modding scene to grow if money's involved, like what happened with paid mods in Skyrim.
