As for the activities, it seems that it has more shooting missions (like capturing outposts and shit) than the vehicular missions. I've only done 1 racing mission so far.

To me because the market for wacky open world games is oversaturated by this point. And also because Rage 2 looks generic.

I got this for free and there's a complete lack of soul. Like, some aspects are good, but the entire atmosphere of the game just feels so phoned in.

It's like going to a theme park but you're the only one in it and all the staff is falling asleep.

I began reading user reviews for this game and had to double check I wasn't reading about the first one: boring, derivative, technical issues, unwelcome driving sections and solid gunplay that isn't enough to make up for the rest of the game. I'm giving this a hard pass since I found both Rage and Mad Max supremely boring and couldn't finish either of them.

Variety.

Game story is very short, around 10-12 hours to complete the story, which includes forced grinding to progress.
Map is sparse with copy-paste strongholds littered across it. Enemy types boring with the only difficulty coming from overtuned damage on harder difficulties.

Performance was great for me.

It's a shame because the gameplay loops is very fun.

There are a few things in this game that are pretty good. Shooting is fun, you can make your dude fast.
I shot a red barrel, and when it blew up the catwalk a bandit was hanging from a left over support beam until it fell too. Not scripted or anything. was pretty neat

From a guy who's actually bought the game and isn't a shill: it isn't worth more than $20. The shooting and combat is fantastic, but that's the only part that stands out. The upgrade trees have like eight different resources for no reason and are a pain to navigate, side missions are the main content and the driving is just plain uninteresting. The combat carries the game, and it's worth shilling out cash for, but it's the stuff in between that's such a pain in the ass. If there wasn't an open world it would be a far, far better experience.

There are some good levels (mostly abandoned towns and huge bandit camps) but generally the level design is really nothing to write home about.
It doesn't help that the most beautiful part of the map (green post-apocalypse to the north) is barely used whatsoever.

I agree, fighting is fun, there's a lot of fast paced and vertical moves you can do and I like the music, sometimes the AI is surprisingly good. But everything else feels completely uninspired:
The game is just brown with neon shit flashing in your face every once in a while.
The menus and progression system are a nightmare.
Driving is awful.
The textures and character models looks like shit, as well as their animations.
The AI is dumb a lot of the time, there's flashes of brilliance in it, they'll dodge, ambush, take cover if your shooting at them, run away even, but it's very rare.
The writing is godawful and they force you to listen it for the first 30 minutes or so.
And the open world is literally barren, nothing interesting to do or find, just a series of checklists.

It's an OK game at best, would have been much better if they had focused on combat and AI instead of shitting 'content' for the sake of it.

The game has bad driving and the typical problems with open world games but the combat is awesome.

the combat mechanics are interesting but the enemies are utterly braindead and don't push you to actually change up your strategies like the enemies in (nu)Doom did
90% is just generic hitscanners, which die in one or two shotgun blasts, there's grenade throwing enemies which are easily repelled with the tennis strike, and very occasionally there are Heavy enemies with a minigun which require more than two shotgun blasts to go down
Then you have enemies with armor, which are simply more bulletspongy unless you use Shatter or Slam to knock off their armor, but having those abilities be tied to a cooldown is a problem given how tiresome it is to deal with armored enemies otherwise
Mutant enemies are fucking braindead and easily dispersable with the shotgun, the giant mutant fights are just a matter of spamming rockets and grenades all at once to kill it in 5 seconds
Upgraded dash is too OP because you just need to dash as much as you can so enemies can't hit you at all with bullets
Immortal Shrouded and the Authority are more interesting to fight and has some more interesting enemy types in its disposal, but you will be fighting Goons and Muties for 80% of the game so good luck lol

They only removed it because they accidentally put the raw exe inside the game

The driving is poor, the downtime spent travelling between areas is unnecessary, upgrade mechanics are grindy and the fact that the game doesn't highlight where the collectible boxes are in an area after you've cleared it so you don't have to spend the next twenty minutes picking apart an environment in hunt of the lootboxes so you can finally check it off as finished instead of getting back to killing something - the only thing the game excels at - is fucking insulting. The better half of this game is a complete and utter chore, and if they'd just removed it all in favour of more combat it would have been a genuinely good game.

Shatter and Vortex are cool but the others suck

It depends. It’s worth buying at 30-40 if you’re interested in playing something new and pretty fun.

But shelling out 60+? If you’re in the mood for a gunplay heavy, objective based, fairly repitious romp with minimal narrative but tons of freedom and progression then I’d say dive in. The driving isn’t spectacular but it’s pretty fun. It’s rough around the edges but quite a good time.

The game needs more enemies, and more varied enemies that need different techniques to take down, but most importantly, the enemies should have some of the powers the player has just to even the playing field. The game is too fucking easy.

I downloaded cheat engine and made the game run at 2x speed while Inside a vehicle, it made traveling in the open world SO MUCH more bearable and weirdly enough the handling on the car felt more responsive. I recommend anyone playing on PC to do the same, you can't go back once you do.

I don't play contemporary fps games much, but I looked through a gameplay of Rage 2 and I noticed the sound design was very similar to Doom 2016. I don't know how to to describe it exactly but there's a lot of weird high pitch clicking, clanking and hissing noises to the weapons and everything else. It's like nails to a chalkboard to my ears. When you compare it to older games like Quake or even original Doom games the shotgun would just make a powerful, dull "boom". Now the shotguns sound like "clickety-clacky clank clonk". What the fuck is this?

I honestly cannot fucking believe this game. I beat it on Nightmare in like 10 or 12 hours. I had gotten every weapon and power like 4 or 5 hours in (All you have to do is hold Control and follow the lights to find the Arks). If I had paid money for this I would be furious.

No. The game sucks. I just beat it. It is piss easy, half of the guns are useless, half of the powers are useless, the story is nonexistent. There is nothing that is good about the game. The gunplay is serviceable and everything else is downright bad.

I heard the difficulty setting is bugged on nightmare and will switch back to easy on restarting the game. So you might have beat it on easy.

Been playing since it came out, my general thoughts:

+The core combat/gunplay is excellent
+Player movement in general is excellent
+The overworld and many locations are very detailed
+The graphics are pretty damn good

-Tons of (big) bugs. I can't even tell if I'm actually playing on hard mode or if it's still stuck on easy.
-Completely lacks some basic features like a flashlight and any zoom function
-Had to completely change A LOT of the default settings and keyboard functions
-Vehicle combat and customization isn't very satisfying

Overall it's pretty satisfying. The combat is SO MUCH BETTER than Doom 2016, I'm really hoping they apply some of this to Doom Eternal.

And I don't even think what you said is true, because the final boss one shot me with one of his attacks (but you have automatic revive powers and then you can just pop a healing syringe). I don't think that would happen on easy.

The final boss is literally: Shoot blue thing. Kill a few bad guys. Shoot blue thing. Kill a few bad guys. Shoot blue thing. It ends. You don't even fight General Cross as the final boss, really, you're fighting a fat titan mutant he is riding. You only fight him during the story mission to get the virus, but he is just a clone and basically fights the same as the other mech looking Authority guys.

Though the problem is moreso that you have to spend more time than necessary chasing down the last enemies in a camp which you may have overlooked. In nuDoom the enemy AI would be told to zerg rush you if there were only a handful of enemies remaining, but here you actually have to use your Batman vision to seek out the last ones because they are so slow and dumb

Upgrades don't fix it. Every Vehicle in this game feels like shit. Wait until you get to the final mission (10 hours in) and you have to use a tank that drives at like 5 miles per hour and actually handles like an elephant on tiny rollerskates. You'll think the first car is like some sort of mega ultra super duper sports racing car.

Soon as you get the range upgrade and the 2 second double dash, there's no reason not to use the shotgun over any other gun. The railgun is massively disappointing, super slow firing and not nearly as much damage as just shotgun aping everything to death.

Most of the guns are outright bad or useless.

All you need is the Shotgun, Assault Rifle, and Rocket Launcher. Rocket Launcher is mainly for fighting the big cyber demons, because rockets to the chest make them fall down for killing.

RG is fine it's just the Shotgun is ridiculously overpowered. I think only the Pulse Cannon can sort of compete with it.

Every weapon is good, even the starting pistol. The shotgun just overshadows the competition by a large margin. Like the Firestorm Revolver is amazing against armor enemies as it usually 1shots them.

One thing people should know is it runs on 2GB cards without much issue at all if you turn some settings down.

I wonder what new guns we'll get. I kind of hope they do more throwback guns like the BFG, for instance the Thunderbolt from Quake, the Venom Gun from RtCW, etc. But I also want more new guns like the Firestorm Revolver and Grav-Dart.

I really wonder what makes people say this. The enemies in nuDoom actually require a different approach to deal with each, and they're agile enough so you have to spend some effort into tracking them, switching weapons, and leading your shots.

In RAGE 2 it's like the shotgun and AR are the only things you'll ever need, aside from the rocket launcher for the heavier enemies which rarely gets any ammo drops for it. The abilities are boring because they quite frankly amount to little more than free kills on a cooldown, except for Barrier. Only the high-tier Immortal Shroud and Authority enemies are remotely interesting precisely because they can't get steamrolled through your usual means, but they appear very rarely compared to the usual cannon fodder. An upgraded dash is super OP since you just need to keep dashing to make it almost impossible for enemies to hit you.

Setting aside the open world shit, the enemies themselves are too singular and passive in their behavior that combat (even on Nightmare, I checked that the bug didn't apply) amounts to little more than a thoughtless power trip. I'm not thinking. I'm just blasting things with the shotgun and AR, and hitting my ability and OD button when necessary. OD and getting a high multiplier showering you with health and making it difficult to die further cement this.

Hard mode since I heard Nightmare is bugged. And regular, unarmored / unshielded mooks always die in a single flare. With the Weapon Mastery perk is kills stronger enemies too because they remain on fire much longer. The Shrouded in particular drop like flies to the Firestorm Revolver.

It's pretty much perfect. I think your issue is that you just want to hate it and thus you 'feel' like something is off to justify your dislike for the game.

I think it has something to do with the imprecision of moving. As if my keyboard movement isn't actually working as a digital input but it's emulating an analog input i.e. a control stick. So it feels slidier than it needs to when I'm trying to move slowly.

I removed all the upgrades for shatter and slam so they are only useless for pushing dudes around and they become far more fun desu.

I'm not going to argue any of your points, because for the most part you're not wrong.

I like Rage 2's combat more for a few reasons. There are way, way more enemies for one. It's pretty common for a single location to have 30-40 bandits. Certain mutant locations can have 60+. This is compared to DOOM 2016 where in most cases you're only fighting 15 or fewer baddies at a time. The high enemy numbers mean that they are usually less spongy, which makes the weapons feel more powerful and fun to use.

I really like how tougher, armored enemies have armor that actually breaks off upon taking damage to reveal weak points, rather than just being a static part of the enemy model.

The player is also substantially faster, so if you want to dive right into the middle of all those enemies you can, and when things get too hot you can just warp out and reassess the situation. The whole free-roam aspect is cool too because you can pick an angle of attack and usually start the fight on your own terms. In DOOM, all combat revolves around the premise that you enter an area, the door locks behind you, and enemies suddenly spawn in around you, which is not quite as fun IMO because there's really no planning involved.

I'm glad to see legitamate reviews of the game in here. The combat is very good, engaging enemies is very fun. But the problem is everything else. Literally every other aspect of the game is passable at best and dogshit at its worst. Still if you like single player shooters I'd reccomend, just not at full price.

Is the AI actually any good? That is the only saving grace of RAGE 1. From what I've seen, the player is given so many power and ways to kill static enemies with no chance of retaliation by said AI/enemies.

Enemies are not dangerous with very few exceptions and whole enjoyment comes from styling on them in the most ridiculous ways possible like shooting darts into some poor bastard and sending him into the air just to lock on him with the rocket launcher and juggle him to death with mini-rockets.

Rage 1 didn't have noteworthy AI, it just had amazing animations.

fucking hell, trying to activate abilities via focus is horrible because you have to hold the focus button for like 0.25s before the menu comes up so you don't accidentally do a dash instead, thankfully instant casting exists, but on the keyboard all the binds take up a load of real estate and you can't even assign MWHEELUP and MWHEELDOWN to actions other than switching weapons

It does get too easy, I just respecced tho and didnt add any damage resistance or damage bonuses on the abilities. The only useless gun I would say is the heavy machine gun one, every other gun is incredibly good. Boring is subjective, but the flaregun and especially the gravity gun are incredibly fun. That plus the abilities can lead to very fun combos. If you don't like the gunplay you probably just don't like shooters. They give you a variety of guns, abilities, and movement options. How much fun you have is how creative you get.
