Came in here to post this, the word you were looking for OP was ambition.
Well, sensible ambition since '06 and Shadow were the wrong kind.
Literally came to post this.
Unleashed's level design had ambition, if nothing else.
Until sonic mania of course but yea
i miss it bros
This and 06 had some questionable gameplay but the OST was truly kino.

Also fuck Chip and fucks spags.
they should remake SA 1 and 2, keep the whole team together unlike what happened with 06 when sonic team was split up and being rushed by Microsoft
>birth of the "modern sonic" design that's been stagnating for a decade
>forgettable soundtrack, first 3D Sonic without at least a good theme song, Rooftop Run is where it peaks
>need to get hidden collectables to even progress
>fucking Chip
Unleashed is anti-soul. The werehog parts, as clunky as they were, were the closest the game got to being soulful.
lets be real. they all had soul until colors. sa1, sa2, heroes, advance 1-3, rush 1-2, battle, 06, unleashed. riders, zero gravity, secret rings, black knight. shadow is by and large the worst game in the series but something like this is so comically absurd only soul can describe it. even the almighty mania feels soulless. but sumos racing games also have a lot of soul so its a mixed bag. its sonic team that have lost their soul and once the new voice actors came in, there was never a good main sonic game again
>Mania
>Soul
pick one
It's decent but it's a fangame. Officially licensed by Sega, but still a fangame, made by a group of people that specialize in making fangames.
Makes literally no difference, it's the best Sonic game in years by a wide margin. Who made it is irrelevant.
you have to admit though the temple vs dark gaia was kinda cool
Are you dumb? Heroes had a ton more soul than the adventure crap.
That would explain all the soul and good gameplay.
>adding an OC that created the brand of Donut Steel of sonics and calls it soul
its simply the opposite
You are a retarded and brainwashed corporate drone if you think less of a game on principle for it being fanmade.
>the OST was truly kino.
This, the OST definitely had soul

>Reminder that SA1 on the Dreamcast was the last time a Sonic game had soul.
FTFY
SA2 was never good.
It helps it was made by Sonic Team USA
If we could please stop talking about Sonic it would be a improvement.
Sega sucks, they should sell this ip to someone else. I legitimately think even EA would do a better job with it. Anyone but Sega.
Every single time Sega releases a Sonic game.
This had half soul if you know what i mean.
Get onr for $15?
Let's not pretend anyone that worked on creating Sonic 1 is still at Sonic Team.
Nice meme.
truth

Based
Cringe
Black Knight was amazing
ly soulless
I thought Zero Gravity was decent but other than that, based list
>Heroes was soulles-
Sequel when?
if anyone can do better why haven't you done anything then?
heroes was freaking boring
heroes was a bad game but not soulless at all
that's what brainlets don't understand, soulless doesn't mean bad game and soul doesn't mean good game
I would chose a better roster for this game for sure.
This, one of the alarmingly rare times Sonic Team seemed to learn and refine from the problems of a predecessor rather than just remove/ignore it.
It's a shame the story book games ended there, I would have liked to see what they could do now that they had the basic working foundation for it.
Explain how heroes was a bad game
Replayed this game recently and I 100% agree
You can feel the soul radiate off the game through each stage, each piece of music, and each character in the hub worlds
The Night of the Werehog short was also based and the fact that the ghost made it into the game as a subplot is pure soul as well
Not saying that I think less of it as a game, the point is that nothing good that came out of that game has anything to do with Sega themselves.
Why hasn't a Sonic game ever taken advantage of 3D? This is a straight line. You could make this on GBA. The draw of 3D is that you can move in any direction. So for Sonic levels should either be intricately layered puzzlecubes/puzzlespheres or big levels with several objectives.
*blocks both of your paths*
I assume you mean an official one, but Sonic Roboblast 2 does a good job of allowing full 3D movement while still giving you a direction.
>linear bad open good
unironically had soul
Honestly this.
>you will never experience the opening scene for the first time again in your home cinema
>dreamcast in the eggmobile
