I tried playing through 1 and got bored. It was too rail-roady, especially since it teases you with that open map.
Outside of Capcom remakes, gameplay rarely improves with remakes, and it's not the graphics that are the problem with the older SMT games. Hell, the pure sprite-based ones still look quite nice.

Its not as bad as with Persona but people dont really talk about smt1 and 2 that much, and when recommending the series people tend to give godawful recommmendations for first game (i.e. Nocturne, or games that arent even SMT like DDS)
the real underrated gem is Megami Tensei 2 though
