Who gives a shit? It was fun as shit, everyone loves it and I can't imagine anyone who never played RE on the PSX as a kid, enjoying the clusterfuck that is the original RE now. It was fun at the time but to be fair it's basically a point and click game with terrible action mechanics and stupid controls.

My first RE was 4, then 5, 6, REmake, RE2make and then original 1. Original 1 is my second favourite in the series behind RE2make. I'm playing 2 for the first time now and having a really great time. The originals offer something completely unique and beautiful and held up really well due to being really tight mechanically.

When? Now maybe not when it came out. It sold like shit on both platforms. On gamecube it did REmake and RE0 numbers. The myth that everyone went out and bought RE4 on launch is false, it got more popular years later. Not a single release of RE4 has even outsold RE3 on just the PS1 even.
