Whenever I find one, and I will admit the last time this happened was mainly due to my own recklessness. Since this happened in Shido's dungeon in the last set of rat's maze corriders, I had ample opportunities to save but pushed my luck and had an unlucky encounter with Titania and King Frost right as I was nearly done. It was my own fault but it's the most infuriating thing and made me want to take a break.

Somewhat unfortunately yes, you can get him back at the end of the game and make him good but you shouldn't be attached to any persona for too long because you'll be replacing them relatively frequently.
