Different does not equal better, firis had some good ideas but they were mostly bad ideas and they actually made some of the good ideas bad.
It was still fun enough, and I think if they polished it up a bit in a DX version it could be great, but as it is it's not that good.

I thought of it as the best in the mysterious series. Some aspects could've used polishing, sure, which left me disappointed when L&S just went back to a traditional system as it'll never happen.

My fav modern atelier is still Ayesha mostly because of lore/story than gameplay though.

The "first" game of a new trilogy does quite well, Ayesha and Sophie both have higher sales compared to the next two games. I can't speak for the Japanese, but I hated Sophie so much I never touched Firis and LydieSuelle.

Next game announcement when? The West is getting Lulua now, so it's about any day now right? There's no way the Lulua hype is still going strong in Japan. Although I don't know the ending of Lulua so that may just tie in to something.

Lulua does have its own story that's wrapped up fine but it also has tons of people mentioning expeditions to explore the eastern continent in the background, most of the characters join the expedition in their endings, and then of course there's shit that isn't resolved like one of your party members turning out to be the tower demon from Totori

Plus versions stopped being a thing after Shallie. In the case of Arland and Dusk they were ports of a PS3 game to Vita and some extra story bits. Sophie onwards has been multiplatform PS4/Vita/PC (Switch L&S, PS3 Sophie) so they aren't doing those anymore.

Dusk Plus will probably become Dusk DX at some point but Ayesha wasn't even released until 2012 so they can fit in an entire new trilogy between now and then.

Physical copies will be cleared out for $20-30 a few months after launch, however digital will at best be $42 before the next game comes out. Totori and Meruru are locked behind update data and a DLC unlcok code so aren't even playable on the disk.

This makes sense to me, particularly as someone who typically only plays the series on-and-off. I tend to only play the first game, just to "scope" things out, but never become invested enough to play the follow-up titles. Technically, I did TRY Totori after Rorona, but quickly lost interest. It's a continual pattern since then, and I would not be surprised if it was a relatively common trend.

I believe it has to do with the balance of gameplay, where the Alchemy portion is fulfilling for one game, but the combat itself cannot hold it up for continuous installments. Even if the item creation is the highlight, I think players would only be further interested in follow-up games for characters and events. Basically, the Alchemy is fun, but I don't think it can hold everybody's interest on a yearly basis.

But don't mind me, I'm still waiting on the next Mana Khemia.

In the best ending her, astrid, and all the other alchemists take potions to become permanent teenagers who just go around being cute ditzes that level mountains on accident.
